DIVISION ONE
Carlton Club A beat Prestwich C 6-4 at home and Phil Myers led the way for Carlton with three wins, Gary Newton added two and Kevin Chapman one. Eddie Simon won two for Prestwich, Lee Devenport one and they won the doubles. Nearest rivals to leaders Ramsbottom Town A lost 4-6 at home. Fielding their strongest players Ramsbottom just pinched the win helped by Mick Moir’s three wins. Mark Ramsbottom and Andy Jackson could only add one each plus they won the doubles. Phil Biggs won two for Radcliffe and Graham Jeffries and Nigel Hallows each added one. St.Philips lost 2-8 to Little Lever. Phil Riley was unbeaten for the visitors, Steve McNicholas and Ian Lansdale each added two and they won the doubles. Only Dennis Collier could get on the score card with two wins.
DIVISION TWO
Seedfield Methodists A beat S.P.Carlton 6-4 at home and it was Tommy Ryan for the visitors who beat David Poytress to draw level on wins in the fight for the top of the averages. Tommy had a comfortable four, five and five straight set win over David in the last set of the night and his third of the match. David won two for Seedfield as did Peter Mears; Julian Nuttall added one and they won the doubles at four in the fifth. John Biggins beat Julian Nuttall at seven in the fifth for his one win for S.P.Carlton. Maccabi A beat Prestwich D 7-3 at home and Stuart Landes led the way for the home team with three wins. Dean Clyne added two, Alan Meltzer one and they won the doubles. Joe Redikin won two for Prestwich and Keith Butler one. For the first time this season Steve Hathaway was without a win. Prestwich E got off to a flying start in their home match against Polish Catholic Club when they won the first three sets. But that was the end of the wins as Polish won the next seven. Alex Waring, Barrie Fleet each won one for Prestwich. The two Eddies, Kalinowski and Robakowski each won two as did Liaquat Ali and they won the doubles. Three sets went to five and all went the way of Polish and they won the doubles comfortably eight, nine and nine. ELPM A drew at home to Elton Vale A. Paul Carter was unbeaten for ELPM and John Dawes added two. Graham Daniels won two for Elton, Martin Nicholas and Mark Craven each added one and they won the doubles. Carlton Club B drew at home to Carlton Vale. Mark Reading was unbeaten for the home team and Stuart Carter added two. Chris Sutcliffe won two for the visitors, Steve Morris and Paul Tatlock each added one and they won the doubles.
DIVISION THREE
Seedfield C lost 1-9 at home to ELPM B. Phil Cooper had the solitary win for Seedfield when he beat Gerry Faulkner at ten in the forth. Division five reserve just lost at seven in the fifth against Carol Mitchell for an upset. Carol along with Steve Greaves went on to each win their three. Carlton Club C beat Maccabi C 7-3 at home. Steve Evans led the way for Carlton with three wins, John Bostock two, Clive Roberts with his first win of the season against Frank Sheldon and they won the doubles. Reserve Sheldon Lee won two for Maccabi and Marc Sheldon added one. Out of form Frank Sheldon was without a win. Ramsbottom held a health 5-1 lead at home to Elton Vale Sports Club B but only managed one more set for a narrow 6-4 victory. Martin Ormsby was unbeaten for Ramsbottom, Joe Walk added two and they won the doubles. Roger Whewell failed to get on the score card for Ramsbottom but came very close when he lost at ten in the fifth to Keith Mills. Roget again lost out at seven in the fifth, this time to frank Green. Jim Bollard won two for Elton and Frank and Keith each added one. Maccabi B lost 0-10 at home to Hilton YMCA. Mark Speakman, Bob Bent and Jimmy Hewitt did the damage for Hilton. Four sets went to five and all were won by Hilton. The closest Maccabi got was in the last set when Robert Clayton lost at nine in the fifth to Mark. In the previous set Melvyne Levene lost at five in the fifth to Bob Bent. Shawfield B got the better of their A team winning 8-2 and Wayne Ellis and Dave Stubbington were the unbeaten B team players. Bob Mitchell added the other win and they won the doubles. Both Phil Herd and Paul Nutter beat Bob Mitchell for one point each for the A team.
DIVISION FOUR
There was
a unique pairing in the match between Shawfield C and their D team. Two of the
regulars in the D team were unavailable. The two players who were reserves were
the sons of the two fathers playing in the D team! A very rare occurrence if ever at all in the Bury League.
It was the ‘youngsters’ on the night who were too strong for the D team winning
8-2. Andrew Webster (not one of the youngsters!!) led the way with three wins.
Ashley Ingham and James Collier each added two and they won the doubles.
Father’s Barry Collier and Andrew Ingham each won one for the D team, each
against their sons!
Prestwich G lost 4-6 at home to
junior team Ramsbottom TT Academy A despite Bob
Goodman winning is customary three for the home side. Bob won his three sets
without dropping a game but was push to sixteen fourteen by Nick Kroll in his
opening set. Ian Connell added one and Gabby Kaye was so close to her first win
of the season losing at ten in the fifth to Nick Kroll. Tom Warburton and Nick
Kroll each won two and together they won the doubles at five in the fifth.
Division five reserve Dominic Siddall added one win beating Gabby at three in
the forth. Maccabi F drew with Holmar C at home. Roy Steventon led the way for
Holmar with three wins and jack Berry added two. Yoni Morrison won two for
Maccabi, Jack Nesbit one and reserve Yoni Morrison one plus they won the
doubles. Prestwich F take a commanding lead at the top
of this division and a 9-1 win at home to Maccabi E pushed their lead even
higher. Peter Canter was the sole winner for Maccabi against Rod Hughes. Paul
Rourke and Alistair Wakefield were unbeaten. Holmar B lost 2-8 at home to
Maccabi D. Sheldon Lee led the way for the visitors with three wins, Buz Cohen
and reserve Yoni Morrison each added two and they won the doubles. Only one set
went to five which was the opening one of the night and saw Ian Ferrari of
Holmar beating Yoni Morrison at four in the fifth. Trevor Candler won the other
set for Holmar when he beat Buz Cohen in three straight.
DIVISION FIVE
Seedfield E lost 0-10 at home to Holmar E. Nigel Shaw, John Heyes and Graham Wardle were the winning trio for Holmar. Bury Grammar School Old Boys B beat Seedfield D 10-0 at home. Graham Hilton with the John’s Rowlands and Greenhalgh were the unbeaten players. Shawfield E beat their F team 9-1 and it was scott Fleming who managed the one win for the F team when he beat Peter Helmn. James Collier and Lauren Brassington were the unbeaten E team players. Wardle drew with junior team Maccabi G. David watts won his customary three for Wardle, Peter ward and Jack Gratton each added one. Sam Ballin and Ashley Landes each won two and they won the doubles. There were five sets that went to five and one to four so it was a very close fought match. Ramsbottom TT Academy B’s home match was made shorter because their opponents Shawfield G only had two regular players and one guest. So the three guest sets go to Ramsbottom and Daniel Allen won his two matches against their regular players. Amelia Behrens won her first set ever in the Bury League when she beat Sam Burgoyne. James Aadahl won two for Shawfield and Sam one plus they teamed up and won the doubles.
