CUP SEMI FINALS
Dwyer Cup
Division
one team Prestwich A had to claw back a two hundred and nineteen point deficit
from division four Holmar C and just did it by the last set of the night. Colin
Boardman from Prestwich faced Roy Steventon and started five points behind. This
was not enough of a lead and Colin won the set comfortably and finished the
match twenty three points ahead; 478 to 455 for Prestwich. Prestwich
comfortably won all sets but Paul King only managed to beat Jack Berry by
twelve points; Jack actually won the first game of the set. David Pegg was the
third Prestwich player and Neil Cowburn was Holmars.
Sponsors Cup
Prestwich
G from division four faced Polish Catholic Club from division two at home.
Prestwich had a two hundred and five point start. With three sets to play
Prestwich still had an eighty two point lead so it was going to be difficult
for Polish to win. John Herman from Prestwich faced Liaqat Ali and lost by
twenty six points so the lead was down to fifty six. Ian Connell for Prestwich
faced Ian Byrne and Ian won by twenty three and the lead was still thirty
three. It was left to Bob Goodman for Prestwich to play Eddie Kalinowski and
Bob’s experience and steady game was enough to see Prestwich though to the
final losing by thirteen points so a win 468 to Prestwich and 448 to Polish.
Maccabi B were at home in the other semi and played
Carlton Club C who started forty eight points behind. The first set of the
night saw Maccabi increase their lead when Robert Clayton took seventeen points
off Keith Cheyne. Steve Evan for Carlton quickly got nineteen points back in
the next set when he beat Edward Freeman. With three to play Maccabi were now
sixty three points ahead so Carlton needed to have good wins in these last
three. John Bostock for Carlton took twenty two points off Edward Freeman but
in the next set Robert Williams for Maccabi beat Keith Cheyne by eight points
so it was left to Steve Evans for Carlton to try and beat Robert Clayton by
twenty four points. It wasn’t to be because Robert beat Steve by two points to
put Maccabi into the final.
Macdonald Cup
St.Philips
had a fourteen four start over Prestwich A but steady play from Duncan
Hadfield, Dave Cheetham and Paul King saw Prestwich win 573 points to St.
Philip’s 551. Dennis Collier, Sean Toland and Dave Smith were the St.Philips
players. Carlton Club A met Burning Desire at home and had to concede fifty
nine points to them at the start of the match. Despite Carlton winning five of
the nine sets played their winning margin wasn’t enough to reduce their deficit
and ended up losing by sixty seven points. Ian Quinn for Carlton played Andy
Kaye in the first set and won by just four points. In the next set Ben
Armstrong for Burning Desire beat Gary Newton by five and the following sets
were exchanged by small margins until Ben Armstrong beat Phil Myers by nineteen
to put Burning Desire sixty eight ahead with three to play. Just three points
won by Gary for Carlton over Steve Barber of Burning Desire then one more when
Phil beat Andy to leave Carlton sixty three behind going into the last set
which Ben won by three over Ian to put them into the final and face Prestwich
A.
Poytress Cup
Bottom
of the second division Holmar A put up a spirited fight against mid table ELPM
A and just came up eight points short of a final spot. Regulars Phil Wardle,
Ian McPherson and David Fletcher were the losing Holmar players. John Dawes,
Paul Carter and Ian Cockcroft were the winning ELPM players. Carlton Vale had a
handy fifty five point lead at the start of their semi against Prestwich D.
Carlton Vale won three sets and drew one which was enough to see them through
to the final by 527 points to 488. Chris Sutcliffe easily won two of his sets
for Carlton and drew the last of the night against Steve Hathaway. Dave Jackson
won the other set for Carlton when he took six points off Joe Redikin. With
three sets to play the lead for Carlton was forty three. Keith Butler took ten
points off Steve Morris so the lead was down to thirty three. Two strong final
sets were enough to keep Carlton Vale ahead and into the final.
Pressman Cup
ELPM B beat Shawfield A by
twenty eight points and put them into the final for the second year in a row
and play Elton Vale B who they played and lost to in last year’s final.
Starting forty four points behind ELPM closed that gap at the half way stage
but then gave the lead back when Wayne Ellis for Shawfield played Gerry
Faulkner. With three to go Shawfield were back in the lead by ten. Carol
Mitchel for ELPM took twelve points off Phil Herd so the lead was two for ELPM.
Gerry Faulkner beat Paul Nutter by thirteen points so the lead was fifteen that
Carol Mitchell had over Wayne Ellis in the last set of the night. Carol proved
too strong winning by thirteen points and won 492 to Shawfield’s 464.
Hilton Cup
Bottom
of the table Holmar C started fifty nine points ahead of junior team Ramsbottom
Table Tennis Academy and it was the Ramsbottom players who made a promising
start which was soon to disappear part way through the match. Callum Stott for
Ramsbottom played Royston Steventon in the opening set and finished six points
ahead. Tom Warburton for Ramsbottom then faced Neil Cowburn and finished
fifteen points ahead so a good start from the juniors. This was soon halted
when a ‘sick’ Nick Kroll for the juniors visibly struggled with his game and
did well only to lose four points to Jack Berry. Back on track Callum then took eight points
off Neil Cowburn and after this set Holmar were thirty four points ahead.
Royston played Nick and it was clear Nick was struggling and lost fourteen
points and the Holmar fight back was on. From this point in the game it was all
Holmar, the ‘wind’ taken out of the Ramsbottom players and Holmar were through
to the final by a clear ninety five points.
It
wasn’t a forgone conclusion that top of the table Prestwich TTC F were going to
win back one hundred and twenty three points from Shawfield D. Fielding one
reserve Prestwich were always going to struggle and despite winning six of the
nine sets they obviously didn’t win by enough. Reserve John Herman had a very
creditable performance especially his last set of the night only losing by five
points. Barry Collier, Andrew Ingham and Alistair McIver were the winning trio
from Shawfield who face Holmar C in the final.
Lomax Cup
Holmar
D had to concede one hundred and twenty seven points to Shawfield F and they
trailed until the very last set when it was left to Alan Fletcher of Holmar
take on Jason Wild. Holmar were nine points behind at the start of the last set
and it was clear after the first two games Alan had the upper hand on Jason by
picking up eleven points to put them in the lead. Alan picked up a further
eleven in the remaining two games to put them through to the final. The match
started badly for Holmar however when Alan lost by seventeen point to Scott
Fleming but every set after that was won by Holmar. The closest Shawfield got
was when Scott lost by four points to Gary Bolton. As to be expected the
maximum handicap player for Shawfield Jonny Thornycroft struggled in his three
sets. Top Ten contender David Bell comfortably won all of his sets; the closest
was Jason who lost thirteen to him.
