DWYER CUP 1st Round

 

First Division Seedfield A had to make up a deficit of 203 points against Maccabi D from Division four and missed by just twenty two points.

BGSOB A started with a lead of 137 against ELPM B and finished with a fifty point lead. There were four key sets that finished with no points to three points difference which left ELPM too much to do in the other five sets. They needed to again around fifteen points per set to win.

Fifth Division Seedfield G had a start of 118 points against Holmar D from the same division and ended up losing by 81 points.

Holmar B started their match just nine points behind Carlton Club C but finished fifty four points behind by the end of the match. Holmar lost fifty points in two sets which sealed their fate and the match.

Maccabi F retained their 126 start by the narrowest of margins and beat Seedfield D 479 to 478. With one set to go Maccabi were three points ahead and it was left to Alan Nesbit of Maccabi and Phil Cooper of Seedfield to battle out the honours. Phil finished on thirty eight points and missed by one point to Alan on thirty six.

Prestwich G pulled back a twenty two point deficit against BGSOB B and finished the match comfortably 469 to 390.

Maccabi E had a seventy point start over Prestwich F but finished on the losing side when Prestwich won 489 to Maccabi 454.

Division one Radcliffe despite their two hundred and twenty nine point deficit to Elton Vale TTC at the start of the match finished just twenty nine behind. Elton went through to the next round 449 points to Radcliffe’s 420.

Holmar C had a two hundred and nine point start against ELPM A and finished seventy three ahead at the end of the match with 498 points against 425 for ELPM.

First Division Little Lever had two hundred and one points to catch up on St.Sebastians and won 480 to 474.

Prestwich E started on 299 points to Adelphi 162 and with two sets to go Adelphi had drawn level on points. David England for Prestwich lost 27-43 to Tommy Ryan giving Adelphi sixteen points advantage going into the last set which Lee Devenport gained another ten points over Keith Butler and putting Adelphi in to the next round.

Holmar E would have felt quite confident at the start of the match with a 156 advantage over Shawfield B from Division three. With the last three sets to play Holmar held twenty five point lead but Graham Wardle had to retire hurt in the very next set. This handed Shawfield forty four points and the lead which they maintained until the end and were comfortable winners into the next round.

Ramsbottom A had a 238 point deficit to catch up but Chris Sutcliffe of Stand proved to be the strongest and causing the biggest problem for Ramsbottom. Stand eventually won by 92 points.

Shawfield D had a narrow twenty five point start against their E team but they extended that to a finishing total of 556 against 474.

Shawfield G battled hard against St.Philips A who had to concede 268 points at the start and with one set to go had narrowed it to twenty four points. Michael Eaton had the task of keeping that lead against Dave Smith and it was the latter for St.Philips who won by twenty six points which put them through to the second round by two points.

Shawfield F must have felt confident with 248 points start against Prestwich C and still lead by thirty five points with one set to play. Jason Wild for Shawfield played Peadar McKinstry and it was the Prestwich player who was too strong and won the match by three points.

Shawfield C started with a 71 point lead against Holmar A who had cut back the deficit with two sets to play. Holmar eventually won by thirty four points.

Ramsbottom D were giving 229 points start to fifth division Seedfield E and with one set to play Ramsbottom held a two point lead. Roger Whewell proved too steady for Val Simpson and lead Ramsbottom to a win by forty points.

Ramsbottom C trailed Elton Vale Sports Club by 158 points at the start of the match and was still fourteen points behind with one set to play. Martin Wyatt of Ramsbottom took on David Hall and it was the Ramsbottom player who was too strong and led them to a six point victory.

St.Philips B started twenty five points behind Seedfield B but that gap was soon closed and they won by fifty six points.

Wardle Conservative Club had an easy task on the night against Seedfield F who only had two players and eventually won by 121 points.

Ramsbottom Academy A only had one of their regular players against ELPM D from the same division and they had a forty nine point start which was swallowed up by the forth set. The remaining sets were very close and Ramsbottom still had the chance of winning when they trailed ELPM by thirty nine points with one set to play. Nick Kroll of Ramsbottom managed to claw back seventeen points from Mario Piazza of ELPM who eventually won 571 points against 549.

 

 

 

 

Prestwich A conceded their match with Maccabi C. Hilton YMCA conceded their match to Carlton Club B.
