DIVISION ONE
Seedfield Methodists A were on the receiving end of a whitewash at home to Maccabi A. Only three sets went to four games, each were Dean Clynes for Maccabi who beat Pete Mears, Julian Nuttall and Andy Hamilton. Louis Rosenthal kept his challenge for the top ten medal with three wins and injured Stuart Landes managed three as well. Radcliffe beat Prestwich B 8-2 at home. Colin Boardman and David Pegg each won one for Prestwich. Graham Jeffries was unbeaten for Radcliffe. Mick Dore and Rob Hall each added two and they won the doubles. Prestwich C lost by the same margin as their B team 2-8 at home to League Leaders Ramsbottom. Andy Jackson for Ramsbottom lost some of his lead at the top of the top ten when Andy Evans and Eddie Simon both beat Andy. Mark Ramsbottom and Graham Hoy were unbeaten for Ramsbottom and they won the doubles. Little Lever beat Carlton Club A 7-3 at home. Lee Devenport, Phil Riley and Dennis Collier each won two for the home side and they won the doubles. Barry Elliot won two for Carlton and Phil Myers one. Darren Lindley was the star of the night for Prestwich A when as well as winning his three against Burning Desire he also beat, in three straight games John Hilton, 1980 European Champion in the process! Ian McLean added two, Nathan Buckley one and they won the doubles. John Hilton won two for the visitors and Ben Armstrong one. Ramsbottom B beat BAE 7-3 at home. Mike Nettleton was unbeaten for the home side though her was stretched to a fifth game by Pete Bradford which Mike won eleven nine. This was the only set to go the distance. Tony Vaughan was the only BAE to win and his two added to the doubles were BAE’s total points. Graham Hoy and Liam Bedford each won two for Ramsbottom.
DIVISION TWO
Carlton Club B drew at home to Elton Vale A and Graham Daniels was the unbeaten player on the night for Elton. Martin Nicholls added the other two. Tommy Ryan lost ground in the top ten when he lost at eight in the fourth to Martin Nicholls and nine in the fifth to Graham. Tommy and Dave Holden each won one. John Biggins missed his treble when he was beaten at four in the fifth to Graham. Carlton quite easily won the doubles in three straight. ELPM A drew at home to Prestwich E and it was Steve Hathaway who led the way on the night for Prestwich with three wins though he was taken the distance by Ian Cockcroft eventually winning at eight in the fifth. Joe Redikin also beat Ian at eight in the fifth for his one win. Keith Butler beat division three reserve Steve Greaves at nine in the fourth. Paul Carter won two for ELPM, Steve and Ian one each and they won the doubles at six in the fifth. By missing one fixture Gabriel Wilding for Prestwich D is chasing the top ten spot but has a match in hand against Seedfield whose room wasn’t available for any fixtures last week. Along with team mates Peadar McKinstry and Bryan Beer Prestwich D had a clean sweep 10-0 against Polish Catholic Club. The following night Polish got their revenge when they beat Prestwich D in the Poytress Cup; a match that was delayed from last week. Top of the division Coburg beat the bottom team Carlton Vale 9-1 at home. Chris Sutcliffe saved the visitors white wash when he beat Derek Watmough. Rob Bent keeps his challenge for the top ten medal with three wins and Alan Cowley was also unbeaten.
DIVISION THREE
Maccabi C beat Shawfield B 6-4 at home. Daniel Sheldon led the way for the home team with three wins to put in a challenge for the top ten medal. Sheldon Lee and Marc Sheldon each added one and they won the doubles. Alistair Ingham and Peter Gregory each won two for Shawfield. Prestwich G kept their lead at the top of the division with a 6-4 home win against Ramsbottom C. Martin Ormsby for Ramsbottom was unbeaten on the night. Only Ian Wheeldon could add to the wins with one. George Marrow and Alistair Wakefield each won two for Prestwich, Rod Hughes one and they won the doubles. Elton Vale Sports Club B beat Holmar A 6-4 at home. John Dodd won his three for the home side; Rodney Hall added two and they won the doubles. David Fletcher won two for Holmar, Phil Wardle and Ian McPherson each added one. Shawfield A lost 2-8 at home to division leaders Carlton Club D. Wayne Ellis and Dave Stubbington for the home side each beat Keith Cheyne. John Bostock and Steve Evans each won three and are first and second respectively, one point apart at the top of the averages.
DIVISION FOUR
Holmar B lost 3-7 at home to Prestwich H. Clear leader for the top ten medal Bob Goodman won his three for Prestwich as did team mate Joe Walk. Joe had to go the distance in his opening set of the night against Royston Steventon and Joe eventually won at five in the fifth. They also won the doubles at eight in the fifth. Royston, Ian Ferrari and Gary Bolton for Holmar all beat Ian Connell. Seedfield Methodists beat ELPM C 9-1 at home. ELPM won the doubles quite comfortably in three. Four sets went the distance and all won by Seedfield. Alistair McKernan, Jonathan Fitton and reserve Adam Simpson were the unbeaten home players. Maccabi D could only manage two sets when they lost 2-8 at home to division leaders Bury Grammar School Old Boys A. Barry Warburton was unbeaten for the visitors. Martin Warburton won two and just lost his opening set of the night at ten in the fifth to Alan Nesbitt. He then won his next set at twelve in the fifth to Frank Sheldon. Andy Evans also won two for Bury Grammar Including his last set of the night at nine in the fifth again to Frank who was without a win on the night for Maccabi. Aubrey Huller beat Andy Evans at six in the fourth. Maccabi E beat Shawfield E 6-4 away and Peter Canter was the unbeaten player on the night for Maccabi. Buz Cohen and Edward Freeman each added one and they won the doubles. Lauren Brassington won two for Shawfield, Peter Helmn and Scott Flemming each added one. Shawfield C beat Holmar C 6-4 at home but none of the home side could beat David Bell for Holmar. Paul Nutter for Shawfield got close but lost at seven in the fifth. Terry Shaw also lost in another close set but eventually succumbed at six in the fifth. Phil Herd also won two for Shawfield. Holmar did manage to add the doubles which they won at five in the fifth.
DIVISION FIVE
Andy Wood stopped the whitewash for Seedfield E in their match against their D team. In the last set of the night he managed to bet Ian McKenzie quite comfortably in three. All other sets were won in three straight. Adam Simpson and Mike Ollerton were unbeaten for the D team. Holmar D drew at home to juniors Maccabi F. John Heys won two including one game twenty one nineteen against Adam Gillman. Graham Wardle also won two for Holmar and they won the doubles. Adam Gillman and Daniel Olsberg each won two for Maccabi and Nathan Jacobs one. Bury Grammar School Old Boys were too good for Shawfield F when they beat them 9-1 at home. Johnny Thornycroft avoided the whitewash for Shawfield when he beat John Rowlands. Graham Hilton and John Greenhalgh were unbeaten for the home side.
