DIVISIONAL CUPS WEEK – Divisions 1 to 4

DIVISION ONE

The Macdonald Cup has one of the longest histories in the League and was first played for in 1938. It has always been associated with the top division in the League and invariably won by the top teams in that division. The Individual handicaps which were started last season attempts to ‘level the playing field’ and give the lesser teams an equal chance. In only its second season it has thrown up two draws and when you consider that upwards of four hundred points are played for it makes for interesting matches.

Carlton Club A met Ramsbottom C and had to concede just sixteen points but ran out winners by a margin of fifty one points. The final scores were 358 to Carlton and 309 to Ramsbottom.

DIVISION TWO

The Poytress Cup saw an interesting result between Seedfield B and Carlton Club B in that they drew on exactly the same points; 557 each. There was a ten point advantage for Seedfield when they started but that was narrowed to one point after four sets. Unable to nudge themselves ahead in the next they found themselves nineteen points behind with two sets to go. It was left to Julian Nuttall of Seedfield to fight it out with John Foster and to somehow get fourteen points from this last set but came just one point short. With drawn matches they are replayed but at the away teams venue. Prestwich E knocked out the holder of the cup from last year Polish Catholic Club. The holders had to concede at forty two point deficit which was slowly clawed back to twenty two with two sets to go. Barrie Fleet for Prestwich only lost by four points to Eddie Kalinowski which narrowed the deficit to eighteen. Ken Crimes for Prestwich and Mick Hill played the last set of the night and the Prestwich player conceded nine points to Hill and the Prestwich team were through to the next round with 527 points to the holders 518. Prestwich C team were less fortunate against Maccabi A having to start seventy six points behind. After five sets it was down to seventy two and with the final set remaining Prestwich had a mountain to climb to somehow win back fifty four points. It wasn’t to be and Maccabi ran out winners with 492 points to 450 for Prestwich.

DIVISION THREE

The Pressman Cup first round match between Seedfield C and their D team found the home team too strong and brought back a deficit of fifty eight points by the time the doubles were played. In fact they went nine points ahead and won by twenty three points; 511 vs. 488

DIVISION FOUR

In the Hilton Cup Bury Grammar School Old Boys A took on Seedfield E and had to give a fifty two point start. With the last three sets to play the home team had drawn three points ahead and finished 583 to Seedfield 563.With one hundred and three points to make up visitors Prestwich F had a steep hill to climb to beat Shawfield E. As the sets progressed the Prestwich players were chipping away at the lead and with two sets to go were sixteen points behind. A strong four games from Alistair Wakefield against Eric Holmes put them in the lead by four points with the last four games to play. Whether the players knew the scores or not it must have been a nail biting finish when Rod Hughes managed to hold off Lauren Brassington by Prestwich winning 530 to Shawfield 529!

DIVISION FIVE

Because there are fourteen teams in this division they had extra matches to play so the only way to fit them in to the fixtures with the other divisions that have twelve teams was to exclude them from the Divisional Cup.

Shawfield G lost 1-9 at home to Prestwich G who are strong contenders for promotion and the top ten trophy for Bob Goodman who led the way for Prestwich by winning three as did Ian Ross, Scott Hill added two and they won the doubles. Michael Eaton won the one for Shawfield. Seedfield F beat ELPM D 8-2 at home. Adam Simpson had three good wins in straight sets, Mike Ollerton and Steve Greenall each added two and they won the doubles. Lawrence Paynter won the two sets for ELPM. Maccabi E maintained their strong hold on top spot in the division by beating Bury Grammar School Old Boys B 6-4 at home. For only the second time this season Peter Canter lost two sets, Edward Freeman and Bobby Lee each won two and Maccabi won the doubles. Graham Hilton did all the damage on the night by winning his three and only John Greenhalgh could add one more set. Maccabi F beat Shawfield F 8-2 to keep them well in for a promotion spot with matches in hand. Alan Nesbit won three for Maccabi, Jack Nesbitt and Yoni Morrison two each and they won the doubles. Peter Helmn and Jason Wild each won one for Shawfield. Holmar E lost 3-7 at home to their D team and it was Gerald Quemeneur and Alan Fletcher who did the damage for the D team by each winning three and David Bell added the other win. Nigel Shaw and Graham Wardle each won one for the E team plus they won the doubles. Wardle played Ramsbottom TT Academy A and just lost out 4-6 which has drawn both teams level on points and it’s still up for grabs who gets the promotion spots. Callum Stott was on fine form winning his three especially his win over David Watts who had only lost two sets up to this match as had Callum. Tom Warburton and Nick Kroll each won one and they won the vital doubles to get the win. David Watts and Harry Barlow each won two for Wardle. The bottom two teams met to see who could register their first win of the season and it was Ramsbottom TT Academy B team who came out on top winning 7-3. Twelve year old Domonic Siddall for Ramsbottom led the way win three fine wins and his first ever. Daniel Allen added two, Olivia Wallis one and they also won their first ever doubles at ten in the fifth. Jim Murray won two for the visitors including the last set of the night at nine in the fifth over Daniel. Barry Simpson added one with also a win at nine in the fifth over Olivia.
