DWYER CUP

Fourth Division Maccabi C received a start of 22 against their Division 3 opponents Shawfield A.  In a match where both sides were closely matched for Maccabi Frank Sheldon dropping 1 point & Les Suss breaking even kept it tight whilst Terry Shaw gained 5  for Shawfield.  The match was finally won by Maccabi by 6 points.  St Philips B took on Adelphi with a 30 point start.  Tommy Ryan (Adelphi), the only player to his 3 sets, gained 27 points with Dave Scowcroft (St Philips) picking up 17. St Philips scored 331 to 333 by Adelphi which gave them a winning margin of 28.  In an all 4th Division clash, Carlton Club C entertained Holmar C, giving the visitors a 41 point start.  In the 7th set Clive Roberts (Carlton) took 15 points off Neil Cowburn (Holmar) to put Carlton ahead and with John Bostock & Keith Cheyne each picking up 24 points, Carlton won the match by 39.  BGSOB A on Holmar A with a start of 54 which Holmar overcame winning by 31.  Ian McPherson was the big points winner gaining 40, ably supported by Phil Wardle & Dave Fletcher with 23 and 22 respectively.  Fourth Division Top Ten leader Barry Warburton won 2 of his sets & only dropping 2 points.  Prestwich D (Division 2) had a deficit of 105 points to overcome against Division 4 Ramsbottom D.  Alex Waring got Prestwich off to a great start winning 44-9 against Paul Wood, as part of a total of 60 points gained & the team won all the remaining sets to run out winners by 26.  Reserve Alistair Wakefield gained points in each of his 3 sets picking up 23 against his fellow Division 4 rivals with Craig Bradbury gaining a further 48.  In an all Division 3 match, Seedfield C played Shawfield B with the latter having a 29 point advantage.  Wayne Ellis (Shawfield) won his 3 sets gaining 38 points.  All Seedfield players picked up points which proved enough for them to finish 26 points ahead.  The all Prestwich clash between F & C saw the F team starting with an advantage of 141 holding out to win by 51.  Eddie Simon (C team) gained 59 on the night but contributions from 3 F team players saw them through.  St Philips A overcame a 299 point deficit against 5th Division Maccabi F to win by 37.  Derek Watmough & Denis Collier gaining 82 and 79 respectively were supported well by Gareth Palmer who picked up 66.  Second Division side Polish Catholic Club fought hard to overturn 5th Division Prestwich G’s 166 point start and to their credit won every set but Prestwich held out to win by 15.

SPONSORS CUP

In a very close match Ramsbottom A kept the 1st Division flag flying by overturning a 208 point deficit to run out winners by a single point.  Big gains by Andy Jackson & Mark Ramsbottom of 74 and 78 respectively plus Graham Young’s 57 saw them home.  Seedfield A of Division 1 travelled to 5th Division Holmar E looking to overturn a start of 211.  Big points gains of 91 & 83 by David Poytress & Peter Mears respectively backed up by reserve Mike Charlton’s gain of 53 enabled Seedfield to win by 16.  Ramsbottom Academy A of Division 5 got a start of 218 against 1st Division Burning Desire.  All 3 Burning Desire players gathered in excess of 60 points but with both Callum Stott & Nick Kroll recording 2 individual game wins it was enough to see Ramsbottom emerge winners by 23.  Seedfield F, with 2 reserves, found it an uphill battle against fellow Division 5 side Shawfield F with the latter turning a 69 point deficit to a winning margin of 69.  Steve Greenall (Seedfield) picked up points off 2 of the Shawfield players but was beaten 44-29 by Shawfield’s Peter Helmn.  Prestwich A found giving Seedfield E a start of 258 too big a task.  Seedfield already held a winning lead when George Jones (Prestwich) took a fall which meant the last 2 sets were unplayed.
