DIVISION ONE
Prestwich A beat their B team 7-3. Unusually all players won at least one set. Peadar McKinstry, Colin Boardman and Dave Cheetham each won two for the A team and they won the doubles. Andy Evans, Bryan Beer and Dave Bolton each won one for the B team. In a rearranged match Prestwich C didn’t fair as well when they were crushed 0-10 by second placed Radcliffe Cricket Club. Rob Hall, Phil Biggs and Mick Dore were the unbeaten Radcliffe players. Top of the division showed why they are there when they beat Prestwich C 9-1 at home. The sole win for Prestwich came from Lee Devenport beat Graham Young. Andy and Keith Jackson were unbeaten plus they won the doubles.
DIVISION TWO
Holmar A lost 4-6 at home to Carlton Vale and it was Chris Sutcliffe for the visitors who were unbeaten on the night. Dave Jackson and Steve Morris each added one and they won the doubles. Phil Wardle and David Fletcher each won two but division five reserve found the going a bit tough three divisions higher and didn’t manage to get on the score card. Maccabi A continued their good form to head the division by beating at home an understrength ELPM A 8-2. Dean Clyne and Stuart Landes were unbeaten for the home side, Alan Meltzer added one and they won the doubles. Paul Carter and division three reserve carol Mitchell each won one for ELPM. S.P.Carlton beat Elton Vale Sports Club A 7-3 at home. Dave Holden was unbeaten for S.P.Carlton, Tommy Ryan won two, John Biggins one and they won the doubles in three straight. Two sets went to five. Graham Daniels got the better of John Biggins at six in the fifth. Mark Craven also beat John Biggins at six in the fifth. Tommy Ryan was beaten by Graham Daniels at nine in the forth to put Tommy just behind David Poytress in the top ten race. Carlton Club B beat Prestwich E 6-4 at home. Mark Reading was unbeaten, Jim Bloomfield added two and they won the doubles. Mohammed Sagied won two for Prestwich, Alex Waring and Ken Crimes each added one.
DIVISION THREE
Seedfield C was dominated by their B team losing 0-10. Two sets went to five but it was the B teams Mike Charlton who beat Ian McKenzie at three in the fifth and Mike Charlton again who beat Jonathan Fitton at two in the fifth. Alan Telfer and Ian Boyle were the other two unbeaten B team players. ELPM B beat Elton Vale Sports Club B 8-2 at home. Carol Mitchell won three, Steve Greaves and Gerry Faulkner two each and they won the doubles. Carol’s three wins puts her one ahead of team mate Steve in the top ten race but tied with Jim Hewitt of Hilton YMCA who is top by virtue of his better percentage. Jim won his three this week in their match away to Maccabi C who were on the end of a 0-10 beating at home to Hilton. Bob Bent and Mark Speakman were the other two unbeaten Hilton players. Only one set went to five when Jim Hewitt just beat Frank Sheldon at nine in the fifth. Carlton Club C drew at home to Ramsbottom Town B. John Bostock was unbeaten for Carlton and Steve Evans added two. Roger Whewell won two for Ramsbottom, Tim Fields and Martin Ormsby each added one and they won the doubles. Shawfield A lost 3-7 at home to Maccabi B. Melvyn Leven and Robert Clayton were unbeaten for Maccabi. Reserve Peter Canter won one when he beat Terry Shaw in the last set at ten in the fifth to deny Terry of any wins on the night. Paul Nutter beat Peter Canter at two in the fifth. Reserve Barry Collier beat Peter Canter at six in the forth. Shawfield won the doubles at nine in the fifth.
DIVISION FOUR
Barry Warburton’s three wins for Bury Grammar School Old Boy A helped his team draw at home with Maccabi D. Andrew Evans added one and they won the doubles. Sheldon Lee and Daniel Sheldon each won two for the visitors and Aubrey Huller added one. Prestwich G lost 4-6 at home to Maccabi F despite Bob Goodman for the home side winning his three. The only set that Prestwich G could add was the doubles which they just took at nine in the fifth. Holmar B beat Shawfield D 8-2 at home. John Millington and Trevor Candler were unbeaten for Holmar, Alan Hibbert added one and they won the doubles in a tight five games at nine in the fifth. Alan lost at nine in the fifth to Brian Philip. Barry Collier for Shawfield had a titanic struggle against Alan in the last set of the night at seven in the fourth. Barry won the second set eighteen sixteen. Second placed Shawfield C beat top of the table 6-4 at home. Ashley Ingham was unbeaten for Shawfield, Peter Gregory and Andrew Webster each added one and they won what turned out to be the vital doubles. Rod Hughes won two and for the first time this season both Alistair Wakefield and Paul Rourke could only win one each so the race for the top ten is still wide open between the pair who are now one win less than Barry Warburton from Bury Grammar.
DIVISION FIVE
Seedfield E were dominated by their D team losing 0-10 and only one set went to four that was Barry Simpson taking a game off Steve Greenall. The rest of the sets were won in three. Holmar E was overwhelmed by their D team with Graham Wardle salvaging the one point in their 1-9 defeat. David Bell and Alan Fletcher each won three for the D team, Gary Bolton two and they won the doubles. Bury Grammar School Old Boys B beat Shawfield F 8-2 at home. John Greenhalgh won three, John Rowlands and Peter Metcalfe two each and they won the doubles. Only Scott Flemming could get on the score card of Shawfield with two wins. Shawfield E beat junior team Ramsbottom Table Tennis Academy 9-1 at home to show why they are well clear at the top of the table and James Collier leads the averages. James won his three as did Lauren Brassington, Peter Helmn won two and they won the doubles. Daniel Allen won the only set for Ramsbottom and eleven year old Harry Bell had his second outing in the Bury League with a very promising performance. Wardle beat ELPM D 7-3 at home and David Watts and Jack Grattan were the unbeaten home team players plus they won the doubles. Peter Ward didn’t register a win for Wardle being beaten by Lawrence Paynter, Mario Piazza and Anthony Vindice of ELPM. Junior team Maccabi G took on the juniors from Shawfield G at home and the home team won 7-3. Ashley Landes and Adam Gilman were the unbeaten Maccabi players on the night but new signing ten year old Daniel Olsberg had his first experience of competitive table tennis. In his first set he lost at ten in the forth to Sam Burgoyne and had a very creditable performance in his other two sets. Sam Burgoyne, James Aadahl and Josh Fallows each won one for Shawfield.
