DWYER CUP - ROUND 3
Carlton Club A from division one played Maccabi D from division four and had to concede two hundred and fourteen points. Maccabi made a strong start in the first two sets before Carlton Club got into their stride and reeled off good wins in the next four sets. With three to play the difference was down to seventy seven. Gary Newton for Carlton faced Sheldon Lee and Sheldon took the third game eleven points to nine which was a truing point in the match. Gary beat Sheldon by just fifteen points. Phil Myers for Carlton played Buz Cohen and despite a forth four points to eighteen win their difference was still thirty six points, too much to recover in the last set between Ian Quinn for Carlton and Aubrey Huller and Maccabi won by just twelve points in the end.
Division two Prestwich E faced their F team from division four and had to concede one hundred and twenty five points. The opening set of the night wasn’t the way the E team wanted to start when Ken Crimes lost by one point to Rod Hughes. Rod also beat Barrie Fleet by four points for a big swing in the favour of the F team. Three sets to play and the difference was still seventy six and Barrie Fleet for the E team faced Ian Ross and won by nineteen points. A twenty three point win for Alex Waring against Rod Hughes left Ken Crimes for the E team thirty four points behind Paul Rourke. Paul actually beat Ken and it put the F team through to the next round.
Holmar B from division four faced division one Prestwich A and had a what seemed comfortable one hundred and eighty one points start. Prestwich started very strong until Alan Hibbert of Holmar faced Paul King and only conceded fourteen points. This was not enough to stop Prestwich drawing ahead with two sets still to play and ended up comfortable winners 467 points to 415.Colin Boardman and Dave Cheetham were the other two Prestwich players and for Holmar it was Ian Ferrari and John Millington.
The clash of the Shawfield teams E and G where the G team started with a one hundred and twenty two point lead. The E team comfortably won all of the sets until three to play and the points difference now down to just thirty Lauren Brassington of the E team played Josh Fallows and drew forty two points each. Peter Helm for the E team then played Michael Eaton and the difference still thirty points. Michael lost fourteen points and the gap narrowed to just sixteen. James Collier, joint top of the averages in division five played the last set against James Aadahl. James conceded seven points in the first two games to keep their hopes alive and had he repeated those games his G team would have won. James however showed why he is top of the averages and won six and five to win the match by just two points.
Ramsbottom Town b faced the junior team from Ramsbottom TT Academy A and started with a deficit of one hundred and thirty one points to make up or the equivalent of fifteen each set. Martin Ormsby took back a handy seventeen points when he beat Nick Kroll. Joe Walk from Ramsbottom Town could only tie the points with Callum Stott which upped their points per set to recover. Roger Whewell for Ramsbottom Town showed his defensive experience when he beat Tom Warburton by a handy fifteen points. Ramsbottom Town were left fifty one points behind with three sets to play; seventeen per set. Joe Walk could only beat Tom Warburton by six points and Roger Whewell beat Nick Kroll by just eleven. With thirty four points advantage Callum Stott for the Academy could relax in his match against Martin Ormsby and Callum eventually beat Martin by nine points to put the Academy into the next round.
SPONSORS CUP - ROUND 2
Seedfield C from division three faced S.P.Carlton from division two and with a one hundred and seventy eight point lead Seedfield must have felt they had a good chance of winning. In the first four sets S.P.Carlton made good progress winning all of the sets by a good margin. Phil Cooper had a very good game against Ian Wheeldon and only lost by five points. With three sets to play Seedfield still led by fifty six. Reserve Ian McKenzie from Seedfield faced Ian Wheeldon and only lost by twenty points. Twenty two points were conceded by Jonathan Fitton of Seedfield against Dave Holden which left Phil Cooper to face John Biggins and keep his slender fourteen point lead. It wasn’t to be and John was too strong and won by twenty two points to put them through to the next round by a mere eight points.
Seedfield E from the fifth division faced Carlton C from division three. Two hundred and sixty three points may have seemed an impossible lead for Carlton to recover but managed that and more by winning 460 points to 443 for Seedfield. Steve Evans, Keith Cheyne and John Bostock all played their part in the win by recovering at least thirty points in all but two sets. Jim Murray, Andy Wood and Barry Simpson all battled hard for Seedfield but they just couldn’t hold on and lost by just seventeen points.
Shawfield b from division three faced Holmar A from division two and had a mere seventeen point advantage. This was increased in the very first set when Wayne Ellis beat David Fletcher by twenty five points. Ian McPherson for Holmar took back sixteen points from Ernie Watkins then Phil Wardle for Holmar beat Dave Stubbington by three points. After five sets Holmar had slipped thirty five behind though picked up two in the next set when Ian McPherson beat Dave Stubbington. With three to play Ernie Watkins beat Phil Wardle by three points and Holmars win was slipping away. Fife more points were gained when Dave Stubbington beat David Fletcher which left Wayne Ellis for Shawfield a comfortable forty one points ahead when he played Ian McPherson and increased that to finish with a final score of 571 for Shawfield and 508 for Holmar.
