DIVISION ONE
Little Lever lost 2-8 at home to Radcliffe Cricket Club. Steve McNicholas for Little Lever beat Nigel Hallows and the home team won the doubles. Phil Biggs and Graham Jeffries were the unbeaten Radcliffe players. Prestwich C beat St.Philips 8-2 at home. Dennis Collier was the only St.Philips player to get on the score card with two wins. Lee Devenport was unbeaten for Prestwich, Peadar McKinstry and Eddie Simon each won two and they won the doubles. Prestwich A managed just one set in their home match against Division leaders Ramsbottom Town A when David Pegg had a fine win over the Leagues Men’s Champion Mark Ramsbottom. Brian Clements and Graham Young were unbeaten for Ramsbottom. Carlton Club A beat Burning Desire 7-3 at home. Ian Quinn, Phil Myers and Kevin Chapman each won two for Carlton and they won the doubles. Ben Armstrong, Andy Kaye and Steve Barber each won one for the visitors.
DIVISION TWO
Chris Sutcliffe of Carlton Vale had three fine wins at home over promotion hopefuls Seedfield Methodists A and in particular beating top of the averages David Poytress. Carlton Vale only managed to add the doubles so lost the match 4-6. David Poytress, Julian Nuttall and Andy Hamilton each won two for Seedfield. ELPM A beat Holmar A 9-1 at home. Phil Wardle won the sole set for Holmar when he beat Paul Carter. John Dawes and Ian Cockcroft were unbeaten and they won the doubles. Prestwich D lost 4-6 at home to S.P.Carlton. The doubles slipped from their grasp when Prestwich held a comfortable lead in the penultimate game only to lose it ten twelve and then couldn’t keep pace with their opponents in the last game to lose eight eleven in the fifth. Tommy Ryan won his customary three for the visitors and John Biggins was denied his treble when Barrie Fleet beat him at six in the fourth. Barrie also beat Dave Holden for his two wins. Keith Butler and Mohammed Sagied each added one. Praised as the best team in the division by Polish Catholic Club lost 1-9 at home to Maccabi A. Maccabi look destined for the first division next season. Polish reported that they were ‘overwhelmed’ at the start of the match by the speed and consistency of the Maccabi players and the only respite came was when Ian Byrne beat Stuart Landes. Dean Clyne and Louis Rosenthal were the unbeaten Maccabi players. Elton Vale Sports Club A lost 3-7 at home to Carlton Club B. Mark Reading was unbeaten for Carlton, Stuart Carter and Jim Bloomfield each added two. Only Graham Daniels could get on the score card for Elton with two wins and they won the doubles at eleven in the fourth. Mark Craven went the distance with Stuart and just lost at nine in the fifth. Martin Nicholls also went the distance with Jim and lost at seven in the fifth.
DIVISION THREE
Hilton YMCA kept up their
dominance in this division by beating Carlton Club C 9-1 at home. John Bostock
was the only Carlton player to win when he beat Jimmy Hewitt. Rob Bent and Mark
Speakman were unbeaten and they won the doubles. Seedfield B beat Maccabi B 7-3
at home. Mick Charlton was the unbeaten player on the night for Seedfield
though he had to dig deep in the last set of the night against Melvyne Levene
which he took at three in the fifth. Melvyne also came up short when he played
Ian Boyle losing at seven in the fifth. Alan Telfer and Ian Boyle each added
two for Seedfield. For his two wins for Maccabi Robert Williams won at ten in
the fifth against Ian Boyle and nine in the fifth against Alan Telfer. Maccabi
also won the doubles in three straight. Shawfield B beat Seedfield C 8-2 at
home. Wayne Ellis and Dave Stubbington were unbeaten, Ernie Watkins added one
and they won the doubles. Phil Cooper and Stephen Siddall each won one for
Seedfield. Elton Vale B beat Shawfield A 6-4 at home. Frank Green won his three
for Elton, just. He came from two games to nil down
with Terry Shaw, winning in five. Rodney Hall won two for Elton and Keith Mills
one. Terry Shaw won two for Shawfield, Phil Herd one and they won the doubles.
DIVISION FOUR
Maccabi E beat Prestwich G 8-2 at home and Peter Canter was the unbeaten player for Maccabi. Bobby Lee and Edward Freeman each added two and they won the doubles. Martin Ingram won the two sets for Prestwich. Holmar C lost 3-7 to promotion hopefuls Shawfield C. Roy Steventon won the two sets for Holmar and they just took the doubles in five. Jack Berry was on the losing end for all his three sets for Holmar which all went the distance. Maccabi F were too good for Holmar B beating them 8-2 at home. Alan and Dad Jack Nesbitt were unbeaten for Maccabi, Yoni Morrison won one and they won the doubles. Alan Hibbert and Roy Steventon each won one for Holmar. Maccabi D managed just two points at home from clear divisional leaders Prestwich F. Sheldon Lee beat Ian Ross and they won the doubles quite comfortably in three straight. Just two sets went to five including Sheldon’s win over Ian at fifteen thirteen. Ian Ross of Prestwich got the better of Aubrey Huller at nine in the fifth. Rod Hughes and Alistair Wakefield were unbeaten for Prestwich. Shawfield D lost 4-6 at home to Bury Grammar School Old Boys A. Andy Evans was unbeaten for the visitors, Martyn Warburton won two and they won the doubles. Andrew Ingham won two for Shawfield, Alistair McIver and Barry Collier each added one.
DIVISION FIVE
Seedfield D just pipped junior team Ramsbottom Table Tennis Academy B to the win beating them 6-4 at home. Ian McKenzie led the way for Seedfield with three wins, Mike Ollerton won two and Steve Greenall was given his last set of the night when Amelia Behrens for Ramsbottom had to retire injured. Daniel Allen won two for Ramsbottom. His first set of the night he lost at ten in the fifth against Ian. His first win came in his next set which he won at seven in the fifth against Steve Greenall and an even closer twelve in the fifth against Mike Ollerton for his second win of the night. Dominic Siddall in the second set of the night just pipped Steve Greenall at ten in the fifth for his only win. Ramsbottom dominated the fifth set of the doubles winning eleven nil. Juniors Maccabi G just got the better of Holmar E beating them 6-4 at home. Sam Ballin was the unbeaten Maccabi player, Ashley Landes won two and they won the doubles. John Heyes won two for Holmar, Nigel Shaw and Graham Wardle each added one. Holmar D lost 4-6 at home to divisional leaders. David Bell won his three for Holmar including a win over top of the averages James Collier. Gary Bolton won the other set for Holmar. James and Lauren Brassington each won two for Shawfield, Peter Helmn won one and they won the doubles. Junior team Shawfield B were comprehensively beaten 1-9 at home to Wardle. Sam Burgoyne won the only set for Shawfield when he beat Peter Ward. David Watts and Jack Gratton were unbeaten and they won the doubles. Shawfield F beat Seedfield E 6-4 at home. Scot Fleming won his three for Shawfield, Jason Wild two and they won the doubles. Andrew Wood won two for Seedfield, Graham Wright and Jim Murray each added one. ELPM D were overpowered in their match at home to Bury Grammar School Old Boys B when they lost 0-10. Only one set went the distance when Lawrence Paynter just lost to John Greenhalgh at seven in the fifth.
