Dwyer Cup

Holmar A started the match with a twenty seven point advantage and held on to a slim five point winning margin against Elton Vale TT Club. At the half way point the advantage for Holmar had gone and Elton took a one point lead. Martin Nichols for Elton played Phil Wardle and lost thirty points to forty two. In the next set between Mark Craven of Elton and David Fletcher Mark lost twenty five to forty one to David so Holmars lead had gone back out to twenty seven; the lead they started with. Strong performances by Martin Nicholls of Elton against Ian McPherson saw the lead cut back to nineteen points so it was left to Graham Daniels to catch up twenty points over Phil Wardle. He could not quite do this and Holmar saw themselves through to the semi final winning by 427 points to Elton’s 422. Holmar A plays Maccabi D in the semi final because they beat Seedfield C 575 to 435. With one hundred and three point’s advantage at the beginning of the match Seedfield were unable to make any headway into this advantage. All of the sets were very close until the final couple when Seedfield must have felt the lead was too great to catch up. Prestwich F started their match against Carlton Club C nine points behind and came through to win 464 to 448. After the third set Prestwich went ahead by four points then lost the lead until two sets to play. Alistair Wakefield for Prestwich made up considerable ground beating Clive Roberts forty four points to fourteen. So in the last set Rod Hughes for Prestwich kept the lead and narrowly beat Keith Cheyne forty one points to thirty nine and put them through to the semi final. Maccabi C meets Prestwich F in the other semi final after they narrowly beat St.Philips B 466 points to 454. St.Philips had a one hundred and fifty one point deficit to make up by the half way stage in the match had narrowed it to eighty eight. With four sets to play they had to make up twenty two points a set. They managed that when Marc Sheldon of Maccabi lost twenty three to forty four against John Biggins and then Frank Sheldon of Maccabi lost twenty one to forty four against Dave Scowcroft. So it was left to Robert Clayton of Maccabi to keep twenty one points ahead of Dave Holden which he did only losing thirty three to Holden’s forty one.

 

Sponsors Cup

Second Division team Prestwich E played Forth Division Holmar B and had to concede one hundred and seventy five points. Ian Ferrari for Holmar ran Ken Crimes close only conceding 15 points and Alan Hibbert for Holmar took a game off Keith Butler to leave Holmar 63 ahead with 3 matches to play.  Barrie Fleet for Prestwich beat Ian Ferrari 44-15 but Martin Archer of Holmar responded by taking a game off Keith Butler to leave Holmar in front by 16 points.  Holmar’s Alan Hibbert put very stubborn resistance before Ken Crimes won the last game 11-5 for a 1 point victory to Prestwich E who play Maccabi B who had a walk over with St.Sebastians. Division one Ramsbottom Town A had two hundred and sixty three points to catch up when they played Seedfield A from the same division however Seedfield had two reserves from divisions three and four on almost maximum handicaps. The match ended with Seedfield on 506 points to Ramsbottom 417.

 

Macdonald Cup

The Division One Cup first played for in 1938 and this round saw a repeat of last years final between Radcliffe Cricket Club who beat Little Lever for the title. Little Lever got their revenge this time around when they beat Radcliffe 446 points to 420. Radcliffe started a mere three points ahead most sets were a very close contest until the last three when Little Lever gained twenty nine points to ensure a semi final spot. Carlton Club A. Carlton Club A beat Adelphi by a comfortable 78 points despite starting the match fifty six points behind. The doubles and Phil Myers of Carlton verses Bret Haslam saw Carlton gain fifty eight points in these two sets alone which was enough to give them a lead which they only increased on and finish 430 to 352 and a semi final spot against Little Lever. Seedfield A started 38 points ahead of the opponents St.Philips A. Seedfield always kept their nose ahead and at one point increased their lead to sixty six points after Peter Mears comfortably beat Dave Smith. St.Philips clawed back some of the lead but eventually lost by thirty one points to put Seedfield through to the semi final against Ramsbottom Town A who had a walk over with Prestwich A.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Poytress Cup

Prestwich D played their E team and had a start of 22 which increased to 32 after 3 matches. This was the highest their lead got.  The teams were well matched with only 2 players, Paul Howarth for the D team & Barrie Fleet for the E team gained points over the match.  When Paul beat Barrie in the 8th match the lead had been cut to 4.  Keith Butler for the E team increased it to 12 when he took 8 points off Steve Hathaway to increase to 12 with 1 match to play.  Alex Waring for the D team took 15 off the 1st 2 games with Ken Crimes taking the 3rd by 3 leaving match tied with the final game to play.  Ken held his nerve to win 11-3 and the match with 518 points to 510 for the D team. ELPM A started a mere six points ahead of St. Philips B and did not hold the lead after the first set was played and St.Philips seven of the ten sets to put them through to the semi finals and they play Prestwich E. Stand has made up for their struggling performance in division two this season with a semi final spot in this cup. They finished on 529 points against Maccabi A who finished with 518 points. Stand started sixty four points ahead of Maccabi and wth one set to play Maccabi had gone in to the lead for the first time in the match by nine points. It was left to Chris Sutcliffe of Stand to face Alan Meltzer of Maccabi and Chris was able to win by forty four points to twenty four.

 

 

Pressman Cup

Seedfield C played Elton Vale TT Club at home and started twenty points ahead of their rivals and current divisional leaders. At the half way stage before the doubles Mike Charlton for Seedfield beat Mark Craven by seventeen points to put them twenty nine ahead to see that whittled down to eleven points after the doubles. Alan Carse lost five valuable points against Graham Daniels to put their lead to six points. With one set to go the match was exactly level and it was left to Mike Charlton to play Graham Daniels and finished six points ahead to put Seedfield into the semi final. Holmar A featured in their second quarter final of the week and on this occasion came out on the losing side when Shawfield B beat them 503 to 487. By the time the doubles had been played Holmar had wiped out the twenty nine point start they had to give Shawfield and went into a nineteen point lead.  After Phil Wardle of Holmar had played Ernie Watkins their lead was six points. Ian McPherson of Wardle lost by four points to Dave Stubbington which meant their lead was a slim two points. It was left to David Fletcher of Holmar to keep that lead but Wayne Ellis proved too strong on the night and won forty one points to twenty three to put Shawfield in to the semi final. Elton Vale Sports Club was never in trouble against Maccabi B and ran out winners by a clear margin of 574 points to 477 points for Maccabi. Elton faces Shawfield B in the semis. ELPM C played their B team and despite starting with a healthy eighty nine point lead they ran out losers by 552 points for the B team against 499 for the C team. The B team lead in points in all ten sets and now play Seedfield C in the semi final.

 

Hilton Cup

Carlton Club played Shawfield D at home and started sixty points adrift. By the time the doubles had been played they were one point ahead. That lead was lost when Clive Roberts played Barry Collier and put Shawfield twelve points ahead. Steve Evans of Carlton comfortably beat Andrew Ingham then Alisdair MacIver of Shawfield got the better of Clive Roberts to put Shawfield two points clear with the last set to play. Keith Cheyne finished five points ahead of Barry Collier to end a nail biting match and put Carlton into the semi final. Bury Grammar School Old Boys A had a twenty nine point start at home to Holmar C and managed to keep nine points ahead by the end of the match to finish on 505 against Holmars 496. Before the doubles the match was all square on points and Holmar crept into the lead when Jack Berry for Holmar got the better of Tim Hope. Their lead was wiped out when Andy Evans for Bury Grammar was too strong for John Millington and they were trailing by a solitary point. Nerves were held and Barry Warburton for Bury Grammar extended their lead and the match when he finished eight points in front of Ian Ferrari. Bury Grammar go into the semi final where they meet Shawfield C who had a walk over Ramsbottom Town D.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

DIVISION FIVE

There is no Divisional Cup for division five this year so this week is a normal fixture week.

Seedfield G lost 0-10 at home to their F team though Graham Wright for the G team narrowly missed their only win of the night losing at eight in the fifth to Jamie Howarth. Jamie, Adam Simpson and Steve Greenall each won their three for the F team and they won the doubles. In a rearranged match played last week Ramsbottom TT Academy A lost 4-6 at home to top of the division Maccabi E. Callum Stott and Tom Warburton each won two for the Academy and just lost the doubles at eight in the fifth to get a draw. Peter Canter and Bobby Lee each won two for Maccabi, Edward Freeman one and the doubles. Shawfield F beat their G team 8-2 at home. Only Joshua Fallows could get on the score card for the G team with the two wins. Scott Fleming won his three for the F team, Jason Wild and Graham Broomhead each won two and they added the doubles. Maccabi F played they delayed match against Ramsbottom Academy A and with a draw keeps the promotion spots still wide open. Maccabi have two matches in hand and can still overtake Ramsbottom won are in current second spot. Alan Nesbitt was on the best form winning his three for Maccabi. Jack Nesbit added one and they won the doubles. Callum Stott and Tom Warburton each won two for Ramsbottom and Nick Kroll the vital one for the draw. Prestwich G beat Holmar E 9-1 at home with Graham Wardle winning the solitary set for the visitors against Scott Hill. John Herman and Ian Ross were unbeaten on the night for Prestwich plus they won the doubles. Holmar D drew at home with Wardle. David Bell and Gerald Quemeneur each won two for the home team and Alan Fletcher one. Peter Ward and Jack Gratton each won two for the visitors and the took the doubles to get the draw. BGSOB B beat Ramsbottom TT Academy B 9-1 at home and it was Domonic Siddall who won the solitary set for the visitors. Daniel Allen for the visitors had a good opportunity of getting on the score card but narrowly lost at eight in the fifth to Dave Jeffry. The John’s Rowlands and Greenhalgh each won three for the home team, Dave Jeffrey two and the added the doubles.
