DWYER CUP - ROUND 4

The first of the fourth round/quarter finals was played at home with Holmar C against junior team Ramsbottom TT Academy. Because of Ramsbottom’s better individual wins percentage at the halfway point in the season, which is what the handicaps are based on, they had to concede a fifty nine point start. Royston Steventon took four points off Nick Kroll in the opening set but the next three went the way of Ramsbottom who cut the deficit to thirty one so a win was definitely on the cards for them at this point. Royston then played Callum Stott and his steadier and consistent play meant that he gained twelve points in the set. Another strong set followed by Jack Berry who beat Tom Warburton by seven points. So with three to play Holmar led by fifty. Late replacement for Holmar Neil Cowburn did his best with his lack of play struggled against Callum who took nineteen points from him so a fight back was still on. That’s where it ended because both Royston and Jack were too consistent for Tom and Nick and their lead went back out to fifty by the end of the match to put them through to the semis.

Prestwich G had a very useful one hundred and ninety point start against first division St.Philips. So with over twenty points per set to recover Prestwich made a strong start losing eleven in the first set when John Herman for Prestwich took on Sean Toland for St.Philips. Bob Goodman of Prestwich lost twelve in the next set against Dennis Collier. Bob again had a strong set when he lost just nine points to Sean Toland. With three to play St.Philips were still sixty five behind so it was just possible to sneak a win. Bob Goodman however played very well against Brett Haslam losing just six points. This made the last set for John against Dennis comfortable with a fifty one point advantage which Dennis reduced to twenty at the end and saw Prestwich through to the semis.

Maccabi D continues in the draw to try and retain the Cup and made good advantage of their ninety four point advantage to finish eighty eight in front at the end. Aubrey Huller from the winning team last year made a promising start against Steve Greaves and only dropped two points. Sheldon Lee for Maccabi did even better in the second set when Daniel Sheldon beat Carol Mitchell by one point. Sheldon Lee for Maccabi then beat Gerry Faulkner by three points so ELPM had a fight on their hands. With three to play and a comfortable eighty two points advantage Daniel lost by twenty three points to Gerry Faulkner so was a fight back happening? It wasn’t to be because Sheldon in the next set comfortable beat Steve by twenty six points which left the last set a formality for Maccabi.

SPONSORS CUP - ROUND 4

SP Carlton clawed back one hundred points during their home match against Maccabi B at home but it just wasn’t enough and Maccabi went through by thirty points. Three key sets helped Maccabi’s cause. In the first Rob Clayton for Maccabi managed a very good draw when he Dave Holden in the very first set and Rob then went on to lose by just six points when he played John Biggins. Robert Williams for Maccabi also did well against Dave Scowcroft when he lost by just four points.  In the rest of the sets SP Carlton won by ten or more points but those ‘lost’ points earlier in the match left Dave Holden for SP to recover thirty eight points in the last set against Melvyn Levene and it wasn’t to be when he won by just eight.

Carlton Club C played Shawfield B and started just twenty nine points behind and managed to snatch the win in the very last set by two points. Keith Cheyne for Carlton faced Wayne Ellis in the final set and the Carlton player had a handy cushion of twenty eight points but when Wayne took the first two games eleven three and eleven five alarm bells started ringing and it got worse in the very next game when Keith could just manage two points. Keith just managed to keep his nose ahead and won enough points to put them through to the semis.

Polish Catholic proved too strong for Division one’s Prestwich C. Prestwich had to make up eighty two points in the nine sets but fell just twenty five short to get them into the semi Finals. The two Eddie’s Kalinowski and Robakowski plus Liquat Ali won just three sets but they had no ‘disaster’s’ in the others.

With three to play it looked like Prestwich were making a charge when Eddie Simons beat Eddie Robakowski by twenty one but a stead next set when Liquat played Lee Devenport to concede just six points. Eddie Kalinowski then had a twenty six point cushion when he played Peadar McKinstry to concede just two points to seal the match.

MACDONALD CUP – ROUND 2

Prestwich B lost by a tantalising two points when they started ninety four points ahead of Carlton Club A who drew level with two set to play. In the next to the last set Bryan Beer for Prestwich lost by just two points to Phil Myers. It was left to Peadar McKinstry of Prestwich to play Ian Quinn for Carlton. They shared the first two games so still drawn on points Peadar then by four to put them two ahead but he just couldn’t hold on to that lead and lost the last set by for to put Carlton through. Division two reserve Steve Hathaway for Prestwich struggled in his first two sets in the higher Division but recovered slightly in the last set when he lost to Kevin Chapman by eleven.

Prestwich A took on their C team and with just three points between them at the start this was perhaps an indication of a close match. The A team came out of the blocks very fast and quickly gained thirty two points in the first three sets. Peadar McKinstry for the C team then lost by just two points to Paul King but in the very next set Dave Cheetham for the a team beat Eddie Simon by twenty three to increase the lead for the A team. A shared set between Duncan Hadfield of the A team and Lee Devenport and Eddie took six valuable points from Paul King to narrow the lead for the A team to fifty five. Eighteen more points for the A team when Duncan Hadfield beat Peadar McKinstry in the penultimate set so an eight point win for Lee over Dave Cheetham was not enough to stop the A team going through to the semis.

Radcliffe Cricket Club had to concede one hundred and fifteen points at home to Burning Desire. Despite Radcliffe winning all nine sets it wasn’t enough to beat their opposition of Ben Armstrong, Andy Kaye and Steve Barber. Rob Hall from Radcliffe opened the match against Andy Kaye and won by nine points. Mick Dore for Radcliffe then faced Ben Armstrong in the second set at was only able to gain one point. With three to play Mick played Steve and took just four points from the Burning Desire player. Though the last two sets were won comfortably by Radcliffe it wasn’t enough and they lost by thirty seven points.

St.Philips beat Little Lever by ten points to put them in the semis. Dennis Collier, Sean Toland and Dave Smith were victors over Ronnie Durose, Steve McNicholas and Phil Riley.

POYTRESS CUP – ROUND 2

ELPM A started the match thirty points ahead of Prestwich E and won eight of the nine sets to finish a comfortable seventy one points ahead at the finish. Strong starts for Ian Cockcroft, Paul Carter and Gill Marsden for ELPM when they took twenty eight points from Ken Crimes, Alex Waring and Barrie Fleet. Barrie did manage to take thirteen points from Gill with three to play but at that point Prestwich were sixty five behind and their fate was sealed when Paul took five points from Alex Waring to ensure they were into the semis.

Fifty six points ahead at the start for Prestwich D was enough to keep Prestwich D ahead of Seedfield A and held a twenty two point lead at the end of the match. Prestwich won just two sets and drew one. Joe Redikin of Prestwich lost thirteen points to David Poytress, by ten to Andy Hamilton and eleven to Julian Nuttall. The rest of the Prestwich lost sets were kept to single figures and the drawn set between Steve Hathaway of Prestwich and Andy Hamilton kept them thirty two ahead when Keith faced Dave and could afford to lose the ten points he did to book a place in the semis.

Holmar A scored their first win of the season after a struggle in this higher division after they won promotion last season. The regular team of Phil Wardle, Ian McPherson and David Fletcher started seventy one points ahead when they faced SP Carlton at home. Ian Wheeldon, Dave Scowcroft and John Biggins managed to win back fifty points but it wasn’t enough to see Holmar through to a semi-final draw with ELPM A.

Carlton Vale played Carlton Club B at home and started just seven points behind and finished the match three ahead! Five sets went Carlton Vale’s way in an up and down match with the lead changing in the very first set when Chris Sutcliffe of Carlton Vale beat John Foster by eighteen points. Steve Morris consolidated Carlton Vales lead by beating Jim Bloomfield by sixteen points. Mark Reading hit back for Carlton Club taking the set with Dave Jackson by an impressive twenty five points to put them just two points behind. Carlton Club had a good run of sets winning the next four to put them thirty six ahead with two to play. Dave Jackson took seventeen points off John Foster so it was left to Chris to face Jim being nineteen points behind. Chris dominated all games and beat Jim by twenty two point to give them the win by just three.

PRESSMAN CUP – ROUND 2

Seedfield B had to concede sixty three points start to the family of Sheldon’s, father Frank and sons Marc and Daniel representing Maccabi B. Daniel has only played three times since returning from Spain and clearly hasn’t lost his touch because of the three he collected the most, cumulative points on the night which has seen them through to the semi-finals winning by forty two points.

Elton Vale Sports Club B started their match just nine points behind Shawfield B but they stretched their lead to thirty three points by the end of the match to put them through to the semis. The first two sets were very close but in the third Frank Green for Elton beat Bob Mitchell by twelve points to draw them level with Shawfield. Jim Bollard for Elton took a massive twenty seven points off Bob Mitchell and had a lead of forty one which was trimmed by Wayne Ellis in the next set when he beat Frank Green by eighteen so with three to play Elton led by thirty eight. Rodney Hall for Elton managed to extend that lead when he beat Bob Mitchell by seventeen and the match was going Elton’s way. The last two sets were too close so Shawfield bowed out of the Cup.

Shawfield A were at home to Carlton Club C and had just eight points advantage at the start of the match but managed to increase their lead to eighty three by the end. They won six of the sets and the three they didn’t win were very close. Terry Shaw, Paul Nutter and Phil Herd were the winning Shawfield trio. Steve Evans, Clive Roberts and Keith Cheyne were the Carlton team.

HILTON CUP – ROUND 2

In a replay of their last round tied match Shawfield C lined up against junior team Ramsbottom TT Academy A. With the junior team ahead by thirty nine points the lead when they finished was thirty six points which puts them through to this week’s round where they face Prestwich G. Ramsbottom won five of the sets but Shawfield never got closer than thirty four points and the Ramsbottom players in good control of their game. There was some excellent playing by all six players. Ashley Ingham, Peter Gregory and Andrew Webster were the disappointed Shawfield players. Callum Stott, Tom Warburton and Nick Kroll go forward to the next round.

Prestwich F showed why they are top of the division when they had to concede one hundred and sixteen points to Maccabi E and won by seventy seven. All sets were comfortably won by Prestwich except when Rod Hughes played Stuart Simpson and ‘only’ managed to win by nine. Bury Grammar School Old Boys A started fifteen points behind Shawfield D when they played them at home but finished fifty three points behind to put Shawfield through to the next round. Bury Grammar had a slow start to the match when Tim Hope lost by fifteen against Alistair McIver then Martyn Warburton in set three for Bury Grammar lost by seventeen. Two more heavy defeats for Tim Hope secured the match for Shawfield who won six of the nine sets.

LOMAX CUP – ROUND 2

Seedfield E could not repeat their cup triumph of a few weeks ago when they lost to the Shawfield Junior G team by thirty five points. There was only eleven start for Seedfield at the beginning of the match and as the final score reflects the sets were tight. Jason Wild for Shawfield had a strong second set of the night when he beat John Duxbury by twenty points. Graham Broomhead for Shawfield also picked twenty one points in beating Jim Murray. A slight fight back in the penultimate set when Andy Wood comfortably beat Jonny Thorneycroft by twenty nine points and closed the gap to twenty two points. Jason Wild for Shawfield held his nerve in the last set against by Jim Murray beating him by thirteen points to put them in the semi-final.

Junior team Maccabi G started just ten points behind Seedfield D and that was up to twenty two after the first set when Mike Ollerton beat Sam Ballin by twelve points. Ashley Landes for Maccabi won the next set against Ian McKenzie and the lead was reduced to fifteen. With three to play Maccabi went ahead for the first time and led by one point. Adam Gillman from Maccabi beat Steve Greenall by nine point then Ashley Landes beat Mike Ollerton by just one. So it was down to Sam for Maccabi to take on Ian holding an eleven point advantage and added another eleven to put them through to the semis.

Bury Grammar School Old Boys B had a hopeless task against Shawfield E because they only had two players which put James Collier, Lauren Brassington and Peter Helmn through to the next round.

Wardle had no chance in their match at home to Holmar D because they had two players; David Watts and Peter Ward. David Bell, Josh Heys and Gary Bolton were the victors in this match.
