CUP FINALS
Dwyer Cup
This is the handicap cup for all
five divisions and Maccabi D and Prestwich F both from division four have come
through five rounds to get to the final. The Competition was first played for
in 1965 and was won by a Prestwich TT Club. Maccabi D had a fairly easy passage
through these rounds. Their closest match was in the third round when their
match was against Stand where they managed to beat this second division team by
twenty one points. Prestwich F dismissed their C team in round two and had a
close match against Carlton Club C from division four, winning by just sixteen
points. Prestwich F had the upper hand in their two meetings in the league
matches winning 6-4 and 8-2. Prestwich started on 99 and Maccabi D on 183, an
eighty four point advantage to Maccabi. The first four sets were very even and
it wasn’t until Paul Rourke of Prestwich played Buz Cohen that there was a
significant move. Paul won forty four points to twenty three and the margin was
down to sixty one.
Sponsors Cup
This Cup is for the first round losers in the Dwyer Cup to ensure that teams don’t have too many blank weeks in their fixtures. Through to the final was ELPM B who finished in the runners up spot in division three plus they were in the Pressman Cup final and Prestwich E, this years Poytress Cup winners. The match is to be played on Monday 11th April at Seedfield Methodists.
MacDonald Cup
The last of the cup finals is to be played between Seedfield A and Little Lever on Wednesday 13th April at Prestwich TTC.
Poytress Cup
This is the handicap cup for
division two teams. Prestwich TT Club E beat Carlton Club B 541 points to 529.
Pressman Cup
The third division
handicap competition was between losing finalists last year Elton Vale Sports
Club against runners up for the division
this season ELPM B. The match was very close and played in a good competitive
spirit and ended up in a five point win for Elton Vale. ELPM had a nine point start which never got
above fourteen. The biggest difference in any set was 10 points.
After five matches it was down to twelve but from then on the margin was five or
less after each match. The lead then changed hands three 3 times with Elton
Vale going into the last match with a three point lead. So it was left to
Hilton Cup Final
The forth division handicap final
between teams who finished forth and fifth in the league, separated by just
eleven points and it was Shawfield C who finished forth who won and retained
the title they also won last season. A
thrilling & high quality match, finally won by 503 points from Prestwich F who
finished with 500 points. At the start of the final game, Prestwich were
winning by three points. At the end of that game, Shawfield had won by three
points. The Doubles was a turning point, won by Shawfield forty seven points to
thirty two. Of the forty games played, thirteen
went to deuce.
Total points were as follows:
Shawfield: Ashley Ingham 137, Peter Gregory 130,
Prestwich:
Division 5
Division five had fourteen teams this
season so the fixtures ran for an extra week during the first week of the Cup Finals.
Promotion was certain for one team but the runners up spot had to be decided.
The ‘lantern rouge’ or last spot had been decided a few weeks ago. Seedfield F
beat their G team 10-0 and though there were several close games the F team
were always in control and the result leaves the G team at the foot of the
table without a win all season. Maccabi E is assured of promotion but their
opponents in the last match of the season needed a good result to get them
second spot. Ramsbottom won 7-3 with
