CUP FINALS

Dwyer Cup

This is the handicap cup for all five divisions and Maccabi D and Prestwich F both from division four have come through five rounds to get to the final. The Competition was first played for in 1965 and was won by a Prestwich TT Club. Maccabi D had a fairly easy passage through these rounds. Their closest match was in the third round when their match was against Stand where they managed to beat this second division team by twenty one points. Prestwich F dismissed their C team in round two and had a close match against Carlton Club C from division four, winning by just sixteen points. Prestwich F had the upper hand in their two meetings in the league matches winning 6-4 and 8-2. Prestwich started on 99 and Maccabi D on 183, an eighty four point advantage to Maccabi. The first four sets were very even and it wasn’t until Paul Rourke of Prestwich played Buz Cohen that there was a significant move. Paul won forty four points to twenty three and the margin was down to sixty one. Rod Hughes from Prestwich then played Aubrey Huller and took that forty five to twenty seven and the Prestwich charge looked like to be on with the deficit closed to forty three points. Maccabi’s advantage went back out to forty four when Marc Sheldon for Maccabi played Alistair Wakefield and managed to increase the lead to forty four. Paul Rourke for Prestwich had a significant higher handicap than Aubrey Huller so this set looked on paper a big win for Prestwich. Aubrey played ‘out of his skin’ only to concede four points and the gap was forty with two sets to play. Alistair Wakefield for Prestwich only managed eight points from his set with Buz Cohen so it was left to Rod Hughes for Prestwich to make up an almost impossible margin of thirty two points but only managed two so Maccabi D defended their Dwyer Cup to be only the forth team to do so. Ramsbottom Town A hold the outright record with three successive wins in 2001/2 and 3.

Sponsors Cup

This Cup is for the first round losers in the Dwyer Cup to ensure that teams don’t have too many blank weeks in their fixtures. Through to the final was ELPM B who finished in the runners up spot in division three plus they were in the Pressman Cup final and Prestwich E, this years Poytress Cup winners. The match is to be played on Monday 11th April at Seedfield Methodists.

MacDonald Cup

The last of the cup finals is to be played between Seedfield A and Little Lever on Wednesday 13th April at Prestwich TTC.

Poytress Cup

This is the handicap cup for division two teams. Prestwich TT Club E beat Carlton Club B 541 points to 529. Carlton had to concede a twenty point start to Prestwich. The match ebbed and flowed from one team to the other though Prestwich were able to keep the lead. The gap narrowing to eight points after the fifth set when Mark Reading of Carlton beat Alistair Wakefield forty four to twenty three. Prestwich just edge the doubles by four points and their lead went back out to seventeen until the penultimate set between Steve Evans of Carlton beat Alistair Wakefield forty points to twenty seven to put Carlton into the lead by one slender point for the first time in the match. It was left to John Foster of Carlton to retain this lead against Ken Crimes which he did in the first game taking it eleven points to five. In the final three games however Ken found his hitting game to take the lead and winning by thirty eight points to John’s twenty five to take the Poytress Cup.

Pressman Cup

The third division handicap competition was between losing finalists last year Elton Vale Sports Club  against runners up for the division this season ELPM B. The match was very close and played in a good competitive spirit and ended up in a five point win for Elton Vale.  ELPM had a nine point start which never got above fourteen.  The biggest difference in any set was 10 points.   After five matches it was down to twelve but from then on the margin was five or less after each match. The lead then changed hands three 3 times with Elton Vale going into the last match with a three point lead. So it was left to John Dodd for Elton to keep his nerve against Steve Greaves from ELPM. After two games John had increased the lead to seven points and after a fourteen points to twelve third game John’s lead for Elton increased to nine. Steve rallied in the final game to take it by eleven points to seven which was not enough and Elton won by five points to take the Pressman Cup.

Hilton Cup Final

The forth division handicap final between teams who finished forth and fifth in the league, separated by just eleven points and it was Shawfield C who finished forth who won and retained the title they also won last season.  A thrilling & high quality match, finally won by 503 points from Prestwich F who finished with 500 points. At the start of the final game, Prestwich were winning by three points. At the end of that game, Shawfield had won by three points. The Doubles was a turning point, won by Shawfield forty seven points to thirty two.  Of the forty games played, thirteen went to deuce.

Total points were as follows: Shawfield: Ashley Ingham 137, Peter Gregory 130, Andrew Webster 95

Prestwich:  Rod Hughes 116, Alastair Wakefield 117, Paul Rourke 131

Division 5

Division five had fourteen teams this season so the fixtures ran for an extra week during the first week of the Cup Finals. Promotion was certain for one team but the runners up spot had to be decided. The ‘lantern rouge’ or last spot had been decided a few weeks ago. Seedfield F beat their G team 10-0 and though there were several close games the F team were always in control and the result leaves the G team at the foot of the table without a win all season. Maccabi E is assured of promotion but their opponents in the last match of the season needed a good result to get them second spot. Ramsbottom won 7-3 with Nick Kroll being the unbeaten player for Ramsbottom, Callum Stott won two, Tom Warburton one and they added the doubles. Bobby Lee won two for the home team and Peter Canter one. The following night Maccabi F met ELPM D at home and needed a 7-3 win or better to get the runners up spot ahead of Ramsbottom Academy A. Their task was made easier when ELPM only turned up with two players and ELPM ended the night losing 1-9 to Maccabi which assures them of the runners up spot. Antony Vindice for ELPM beat Yoni Morrison for their sole win. Alan and Jack Nesbit were unbeaten and they won the doubles. Holmar E lost 4-6 at home to Prestwich G and it was Bob Goodman who led the way with three wins to clinch his top ten spot with only one defeat all season which was to Edward Freeman of the top team Maccabi E. Ian Ross added two wins to Prestwich and Scott Hill one. Graham Wardle won two for the home team, John Heyes on plus they won the doubles. Shawfield G lost 1-9 to their F team and it was Joshua Fallows for the G team who beat Jason Wild. Peter Helmn and Scott Fleming were unbeaten for the F team plus they won the doubles. Wardle lost 4-6 at Holmar despite David Watts for the home team being unbeaten. Only Harry Barlow could add to their score with one win. Alan Fletcher and David Bell each won two for Holmar, Gerald Quemeneur one and they won the doubles.
