DIVISION ONE
Prestwich A beat Seedfield A 7-3 at home. Andrew Tarpey was unbeaten for Prestwich, Nathan Buckley added two, Duncan Hadfield one and they won the doubles. Pater Mears won two for Seedfield and David Poytress one. Maccabi A had a reverse of fortunes when they played Ramsbottom B at home. At their away fixture in the first half of the season they won 9-1 against Ramsbottom B. At home, admittedly with an understrength team they lost 1-9 with Stuart Landes winning the one against Liam Bedford. Graham Hoy and Mike Nettleton were unbeaten for Ramsbottom. In only his fifth appearance this season unbeaten Mick Moir helped Ramsbottom A to an 8-2 home win against Little Lever. Andy Jackson was also unbeaten for Ramsbottom, Graham Young added one and they won the doubles. Burning Desire lost 2-8 at home to Prestwich B. Colin Boardman was unbeaten for the visitors with Andrew Tarpey and Paul King each adding two and they won the doubles. Ben Armstrong and Steve Barber each won one for the home side.
DIVISION TWO
Seedfield B could only manage a
win in the doubles when they lost 1-9 at home to ELPM A. They only just managed
the win however at seven in the fifth. No other set went to five and only four
went to four so a heavy defeat for Alan Telfer, Mike Charlton and Ian Boyle of
Seedfield. Rob and Paul Carter plus Ian Cockcroft were the unbeaten ELPM A
players. Elton Vale A lost 3-7 to division leaders Coburg. Graham Daniels, Mike
Nichols and division three reserve Jim Bollard each won one for Elton. Derek
Watmough was unbeaten for Coburg, Rob Bent added two, Jimmy Hewit one and they
won the doubles. Carlton Vale lost 2-8 at home ot Prestwich D. Chris Sutcliffe won both sets for the
home side when he beat Bryan Beer and Nathan Buckley. Peadar McKinstry was
unbeaten for Prestwich and they also added the doubles. Prestwich F was always
going to struggle against their E team because they only had two players. Rob
Lee was the only player for the F team to win any sets but he teamed up with
Alex Waring to add the doubles. Steve Hathaway was unbeaten for the E team and
Keith Butler and Joe Redikin were the two players Rob defeated. Polish Catholic
Club beat Carlton Club C 8-2 at home. Eddie Robakowski was the star player on
the night with three wins, Eddie Kalinowski and Peter Hill each won two and
they won the doubles. Stuart Carter and Jim Bloomfield each won one for the
visitors.
DIVISION THREE
Carlton Club D beat Elton Vale B 8-2 at home to keep their challenge for promotion well on target. They are eleven points clear of third placed ELPM B so look to have the promotion spot secured. Steve Evans and John Bostock were the unbeaten Carlton players. Keith Cheyne lost to Jim Bollard of Elton Vale. Elton Vale also won the doubles. ELPM B beat Maccabi 8-2 at home to keep themselves in third place and a possible promotion threat. Steve Greaves was unbeaten for the home side, Carol Mitchell and Gerry Faulkner each added two and they won the doubles; Daniel Sheldon won the two for Maccabi. Maccabi B beat Shawfield A 6-4 at home. Alan Meltzer was unbeaten for Maccabi including a ‘three straight’ win over Wayne Ellis. Robert Williams added two; his last set of the night he won at eleven in the fifth against Dave Stubbington. Marc Sheldon added the other win for Maccabi and was his opening set of the night where he beat Dave Stubbington at ten in the fifth. The doubles was also a very close set which Shawfield won at nine in the fifth. Wayne Ellis won two and Ernie Watkins ‘broke his duck’ with his first win of the season over Marc Sheldon at five in the fifth.
DIVISION FOUR
Maccabi E lost 2-8 at home to Shawfield C. Terry Shaw and Phil Herd were the unbeaten players for Shawfield. Paul Nutter added one and they won the doubles. Peter Canter and Edward Freeman each won one for Maccabi. Holmar B beat Seedfield C 7-3 at home. John Millington led the way for Holmar with three wins. Ian Ferrari two, Royston Steventon one and they won the doubles. In the opening set of the night Ali McKernan beat Ian at five in the fifth and Royston in three straight for his two wins. Jonathan Fitton beat Royston at four in the fourth for his one win. The doubles was a close set but eventually won by Holmar at eight in the fifth. Holmar C lost 4-6 at home to Maccabi D. Gary Bolton won two for Holmar, Jack Berry and David Bell each adding one. Scott Marshall was unbeaten for Maccabi who are in third place though Prestwich H seven points above them have played one more match. Aubrey Huller won two and they won the doubles. Prestwich were ‘hammered’ 2-8 at home to division leaders Bury Grammar A. For only the second time this season Bob Goodman only won one for Prestwich. The other time he only won one was against the same team. He does keep his lead in the averages and must have been disappointed to lose at fourteen in the fifth to Martyn Warburton who, along with Barry was unbeaten for Bury Grammar. It is the first time this season Joe Walk for Prestwich was without a win and came close in his last set of the night losing at nine in the fifth to Andy Evans who won two on the night. The doubles was the only other set that Prestwich won which they did at seven in the fifth. Shawfield D lost 2-8 to divisional leaders Shawfield E. Lauren Brassington and Peter Helmn were unbeaten for the E team and James Collier added two. Brian Philip was the only D team player to get on the card with one win and they won the doubles.
DIVISION FIVE
Junior team Maccabi F beat Wardle B 6-4 at home. None of the home players could get the better of Ian Barton who won his three for the visitors and they added the doubles. Adam Gilman, Dov Seitler and David End each won two for Maccabi. Bury Grammar B beat Holmar D 6-4 at home. Graham Hilton and John Greenhalgh each won two for the home side, Tim Hope one and they won the doubles. John Heyes and Nigel Shaw each won two for Holmar. Top of the division Wardle A played the bottom team Seedfield E and it was Barry Simpson for the visitors who stopped a clean sweep for Wardle when he had a fine win over Jack Gratton at ten in the fifth. Harry Barlow and Peter Ward were the unbeaten Wardle players.
