DIVISION ONE
Promoted Maccabi A took on Prestwich B away and drew the match. Playing in the top division for the first time was current junior champion Dean Clyne who had a creditable performance though ended up without any wins. The closed he came was against David Pegg and narrowly lost at seven in the fifth. Louis Rosenthal was unbeaten on the night for Maccabi, Stuart Landes won one and they won the doubles at eight in the fifth. The David’s Pegg and Cheetham each won two for Prestwich and Colin Boardman added the other win. Prestwich C lost 4-6 at home to Ramsbottom A. New signing for Ramsbottom from the East Lancs League was Alan Auxilly who was unbeaten on the night. Graham Hoy added two and they won the doubles. Andy Evans won two for Prestwich with Dave Bolton and Eddie Simon each winning one. Little Lever had a very strong start to the season beating Seedfield A 9-1 at home. David Poytress won the only set for Seedfield when he beat Steve McNicholas. Lee Devenport and Phil Riley were unbeaten for Little Lever. Runners up in the division for many years Radcliffe CC faced some new opposition against Prestwich A who have two top players from the Oldham League signed on this season. Darren Lindley, one of the new signings won his three for Prestwich, Duncan Hadfield and Ian McLean each added one. Graham Jeffries won two for Radcliffe, Ron Hall and Phil Biggs each added one and they won the doubles. Ramsbottom A beat Burning Desire 8-2 at home including a fine win by Andy Kaye for the visitors over Andy Jackson. Steve Barber for the visitors beat Graham Young. Mark Ramsbottom was unbeaten for the home side plus they won the doubles.
DIVISION TWO
Promoted team Seedfield B started their season in a higher division with a fine 6-4 win over Carlton Vale. Despite Dave Jackson winning his three for the visitors he still finished up on the losing side. Chris Sutcliffe could only add one more win for Carlton Vale. Alan Telfer and Frank Carse each won two for the home side, Ian Boyle one and they won the doubles. Alan’s second win of the night, the last set of the match was narrowly won at twelve ten in the fifth over Chris Sutcliffe. Prestwich D drew at home to newly promoted Coburg TT Club. Peadar McKinstry and Gabriela Wilding each won two for Prestwich and they won the doubles. Rob Bent and new signing Derek Watmough each won two for the visitors and Jimmy Hewit added one. Prestwich E also drew at home in their first match of the season against Elton Vale Sports Club A. Keith Butler and Steve Hathaway each won two for Prestwich and Joe Redikin added one. Graham Daniels and Mark Craven each won two for the visitors and they won the doubles. Carlton Club C lost 1-9 at home to their B team and it was Jim Bloomfield for the C team who saved the whitewash when he beat Tommy Ryan at nine in the forth. Dave Holden and John Biggins were the unbeaten B team players. Nine sets went to four games and eight were won by the B team Polish Catholic Club beat Prestwich F 7-3 at home. Ian Byrne was unbeaten for Polish with Liaqat Ali and Eddie Robakowski each adding two. Three out of five sets went the way of Polish. Barrie Fleet was the only Prestwich player to get on the card winning two and they won the doubles. Mike Dunn for Prestwich came very close in the last set of the night and just lost to Ian Byrne at six in the fifth. Alex Waring lost by exactly the same score line against Eddie Robakowski.
DIVISION THREE
Carlton Club D beat Shawfield B 7-3 at home. John Bostock and Steve Evans were unbeaten for the home side plus they won the doubles. Division four players made up the visitors team from Shawfield. Roger Snowden, Andrew Ingham and Andrew Webster each won one on the night. Holmar B are back in the third division this season after gaining promotion and playing in division two last season. They faced one of the favourites for top spot in the division this season, ELPM B and ended up on an 2-8 losing side. Phil Wardle and Ian McPherson each won one for Holmar. Steve Greaves was unbeaten for ELPM, Carol Mitchell and Gerry Faulkner each added tow and they won the doubles. Elton Vale Sports Club B faced newly promoted Prestwich G and the visitors came away with a very creditable draw in their first match in a higher division. Paul Rourke and Alistair Wakefield each won two for Prestwich and they won the doubles. Jim Bollard and Rodney Hall each won two for Elton and John Dodd added one. Maccabi B beat Ramsbottom Town C 6-4 at home. Marc Sheldon, Robert Williams and Alan Meltzer each won two for Maccabi and they won the doubles at nine in the forth. Martin Ormsby won two for Ramsbottom and lost at nine in the fifth against Marc Sheldon to deny his treble for the night. New signing Ian Wheeldon won his last set of the night at seven in the fifth against Marc Sheldon.
DIVISION FOUR
Maccabi E lost 3-7 at home to Prestwich H where Bob Goodman and Joe Walk were the unbeaten players for the visitors who also won the doubles. Buz Cohen, Peter Canter and Edward Freeman each won one for the home side. Maccabi D lost 3-7 at home to Holmar B. Six sets went the distance and they were all won by Holmar! Alan Nesbit, Frank Sheldon and Ashley Landes each won one for the home side. Royston Steventon was unbeaten for Holmar, Jim Millington won two, Ian Ferrari one and they won the doubles. Bury Grammar School Old Boys A beat ELPM C 7-3 at home. Barry Warburton and Andy Evans were unbeaten for the home side and reserve Tim Hope added one. Debbie Wilson has made a welcome return to ELPM after a long break and managed one win. Harry Uren also won one and they won the doubles. Holmar C beat Shawfield D 7-3 at home. Winning the top ten in division five last season was David Bell and he made the best possible start in a higher division by winning his three. Gary Bolton won two, Jack Berry one and they added the doubles. Andrew Ingham won two for Shawfield and Barry Collier one.
DIVISION FIVE
Seedfield E started their season with a struggle as they could only field two players plus a guest against Holmar D. Andrew Wood won two for the home side including a tough opening set against Alan Fletcher and eventually took the honours at three in the fifth. John Heyes was the unbeaten player on the night for Holmar with Alan Fletcher and Patrick Black each adding two. Holmar comfortably won the doubles in three straight. Wardle A beat Shawfield F 6-4 at home when they snatched the last two sets of the night. Jack Gratton was unbeaten for Wardle, Peter Ward added two and they won the doubles. Jason Wild won two for Shawfield< Jonny Thornycroft and Maz Khan each added one. ELPM D lost 1-9 at home to Bury Grammar School Old Boys B. Antony Vindice won the only set of the night for the home team beating John Rowlands. Graham Hilton and John Greenhalgh each won three and they won the doubles to put them at the top of the divisions after week one. Junior team Ramsbottom Academy got off to a flying start when they beat Wardle B who is another junior team new to the League this season. Fourteen year old Dominic Siddall, eleven year old Harry Bell and seventeen year old Amelia Behrens were the unbeaten Academy players.
