Bury and District Table Tennis League Week 21 Match Report

Division 1

Seedfield A lost 3-7 at home to Prestwich A. Peter Mears and Rob Carter each won one but unusually David Poytress failed to get on the score card; narrowly losing his last match at 7 in the fifth to David Pegg who won his three for Prestwich A as did Adam Rowbotham. Peter Mears also lost in the fifth at 11 to Adam. George Jones added one for Prestwich and Seedfield won the doubles. BAE comfortably beat Ramsbottom C 9-1 at home. Two sets did go to five but both were won by the home team. Regulars Tony Bates, Tony Smith and Tom Lang each won their three and Ramsbottom picked up the doubles. Ramsbottom A beat Little Lever 7-3 and Mick Moir’s three wins seals the top ten for him for the eighth time (2004 joint with Jim Chadwick). Andy Jackson won two, Mark Ramsbottom one and they won the doubles. Ronnie Durose won two for Little Lever and Steve McNicholas one. Hilton Bury lost 3-7 at home to second placed Radcliffe. Harry Brennand won two for the home team, George Brennand one and unusually Bill Russell failed to register a win. Rob Hall, Mick Dore and Nigel Hallows each won two for Radcliffe and they won the doubles. Carlton Club A beat ELPM A 9-1 at home and Eddie Darlington was the only ELPM player to get on the score card with a win over Kevin Chapman. Ian Quinn and Phil Myers each won three for Carlton plus they won the doubles. Burning Desire lost 3-7 at home to Ramsbottom B where Ben Armstrong, Andy Kaye and Steve Barber each won one for the home side. A rare return from University saw Josh Bleakley win his three for the visitors as did Khamal Hussain plus they won the doubles.

Division 2

Wardle A drew with Prestwich C where Duncan Hadfield won his three and only Simon Walsh could add another win because they had a guest player. Wardle won the doubles. Bryan Beer and Peadar McKinstry each won two for Prestwich and Ken Crimes 1.With two matches to go Wardle are five points ahead of third placed Adelphi so are in the promotion zone. Prestwich E comfortably beat their B team 7-3 but the E team still look likely to be relegated with one match to go. Dave Bolton and Barrie Fleet each won their three for the E team and Ian Connell added one. Alex Waring and Steve Hathaway each added one for the B team and they won the doubles. Grubba Fans lost 3-7 at home to St.Philips A though Lukasz Serdiuk won his three for Grubba. Derek Watmough, Dennis Collier and Clive Taylor all won two for the visitors and they won the doubles. St.Philips B lost 4-6 at home to Seedfield B though the home team only had two players. Gareth Palmer won his three for St.Philips and John Biggins added one. Julian Nuttall and Andy Hamilton each won two for the visitor’s, Stephen Siddall one and the added the doubles. Polish Club lost 4-6 to Prestwich D but Eddie Kalinowski did win his three for the home team including a win at 14-12 in the fifth against Andy Evans. Eddie Robakowski added one to the Polish Club. Andy Evans and Craig Bradbury each won two for the visitors, Steve Hathaway one and they won the doubles. Adelphi won 7-3 at home to Carlton Club B who are now certain to be relegated. There opponents on the other hand are in second place two points ahead of Wardle A who have a match in hand so the second promotion spot is still uncertain. Lee Devenport won his three and only needs one win in his last match to secure the top ten. Tommy Ryan added three as well and Bernard Davies one. John Foster and Mark Reading each won one for the visitors.

Division 3

Seedfield C drew with Hilton YMCA where Peter Ingham and Mike Charlton each won two and they won the doubles. Alan Crompton was on top form for the visitors with three wins and Alan Bradshaw and Barry Walsh each added one. ELPM B have won the division with one match still to play. Their 7-3 win this week against Claybank secured their win. Mark Willmore, Gerry Faulkner and John Dawes each won their three for ELPM and they won the doubles. Graham Daniels won two for the visitors and Mike Nichols added one. The top ten is still undecided though Graham Daniels has the lead with one match remaining. Maccabi A lost 3-7 at home to Shawfield A who are struggling at the bottom of the division so this result is just what they needed if they intend to stay in this division next season. Robert Williams won two for the home side and Melvyn Levene one. Wayne Ellis won his three for the visitors and keeps alive his homes of the top ten medal being just one behind leader Graham Daniels of Claybank. Ernie Watkins won two, Bob Mitchell one and they won the doubles. Maccabi B beat Elton Vale 8-2 at home where Stuart Landes won his three, Dean Clyne and Alan Meltzer two each and they added the doubles. Keith Mills and John Dodd won each for the visitors and Rodney Hall unusually was without a win though he did go to five with Dean Clyne and lost at nine in the fifth. Stand beat bottom placed ELPM C who will be relegated next season and their opponents have come into some good late season form dropping just four points in their last three matches and look set to finish third in the division. Chris Sutcliffe and Paul Tatlock each won their three, Dave Jackson two and they won the doubles. The visitor’s only success was a good straight sets win against Dave Jackson.

Division 4

Holmar A beat Seedfield E 9-1 and look certain to be runner up in the division and get promoted next season. Phil Wardle and Geoff Crowther each won three. David Fletcher lead the top ten through the first half of the season but has lost a few more sets in this second half and is likely to loose out to Dave Hargreaves of St.Sebastians. David won two and Holmar won the doubles. Only Jonathan Fitton managed a win for Seedfield with a very good win over David Fletcher. Prestwich F beat BGSOB A 7-3 and Alistair Wakefield lead the way for the home team with three wins, Richard Hinchcliffe two, John Herman one and they won the doubles. Barry Warburton won two for the visitors and Andy Evans one. St.Sebastians beat Shawfield C 8-2 at home to seal the divisional title and Dave Hargreaves won the top ten title. Dave Hargreaves and Mark Stevens won their three and Dave Stevens two. Mark Lever won the only individual set for the visitors and they won the doubles. Maccabi D had a good draw at home to third place Carlton Club C. They were trailing 2-5 and won the last three sets. Barry Cohen and Louis Samuels each won two and Sheldon Lee won one. Steve Evans and Keith Cheyne each won two for the visitors and they added the doubles. Shawfield D lost 3-7 at home to Holmar B and look destined to division five next season. Ashley Ingham won two and Barry Collier one for the home team. Alan Hibbert, Jim Eardley and Martin Archer each won two for Holmar and they won the doubles. Holmar C took the last three sets to beat Maccabi C 6-4 at home. Ian McPherson won three for the home team, Ian Ferrari two and Trevor Candler one. Robert Clayton, Stuart Simpson and Aubrey Huller each won one for Maccabi and they won the doubles.

Division 5

Seedfield F lost 3-7 at home to Holmar E. Jamie Howarth won two for Seedfield and Steve Greenall added one. Reserve Graham Wright was unlucky in his last set losing at 18 in the fifth! Nigel Shaw won his three for Holmar, Graham Wardle two, John Woodward 1 and they won the doubles. Bottom placed Seedfield G lost 0-10 to Maccabi E where Peter Canter, Bobby Lee and Edward Freeman each won their three for the visitors and the doubles. Next to the bottom Shawfield G lost to top team Ramsbottom D who are certain to be promoted and winning division five. Neil Booth, Bryan Edwards and Roy Steventon each won their three and they won the doubles. ELPM D lost 0-10 at home to Holmar D who secure their runner up spot in the division. Alan Fletcher, Jack Berry and Neil Cowburn each won three and they won the doubles. BGSOB B lost 2-8 against Shawfield E. John Greenhalgh and John Rowlands each won one for the home team. Brian Philip won his three for the visitors, Lauren Brassington and Mark Lever two each and they won the doubles. Shawfield F beat Wardle B 6-4 at home. Alex Braid and Joshua Fallows each won two, Mike Singleton one and they won the doubles. Harry Barlow and Neil Bamford each won two for Wardle and with Dave Watts not playing the top ten is tied with Roy Steventon on Ramsbottom D but with fewer losses Watts takes top spot.

11th April sees the return of the Closed Championships to Castle Leisure Centre in Bury. A round robin format for the Open Singles event ensures several matches in the early stages before it goes to a straight knockout. The usual doubles, veterans and handicapped events are on offer as well as a welcomed return for the junior event which is open to all who attend Ramsbottom Table Tennis Academy on a Friday evening.
