Bury and District Table Tennis League Week 20 Match Report

Division 1

Radcliffe CC look set to finish runners up in this division yet again though new comers to the League BAE looked to be making a challenge earlier in the season. Radcliffe’s 10-0 win at home help their position. Rob Hall, Jim Chadwick and Mick Dore each won their three against Carlton Club A and they won the doubles. Little Lever beat Hilton Bury 7-3 at home with three wins from Ronnie Durose for the home team, two from Steve Nicholas one from Ian Lansdale and they won the doubles. George Brennand won two for the visitors and Callan Tolliday won one. ELPM A lost 4-6 at home to Burning Desire. Eddie Darlington won two, Andy McCheyne one as did third division reserve John Dawes won beat Steve Barber at six in the fifth; an excellent performance. Phil Riley won three for the visitors, Ben Armstrong two and they won the doubles. Steve Barber had two of his matches going to five and ended up without a win on the night. League Leaders Ramsbottom A crushed third placed BAE 9-1 and with two matches left before the season ends Ramsbottom have a comfortable 22 point lead over second placed Radcliffe though the latter do have a match in hand. Mick Moir, Mark Ramsbottom and Andy Jackson all won their three for the home team and BAE snatched the doubles. Tony Smith did take Mick Moir to five but lost out at three in the last. Tom Lang also too Andy Jackson to fine but lost at five in the last. Prestwich A lost 2-8 to Ramsbottom C where George Jones and reserve Andy Evans each won one. Dave Kay was on fine form for the visitors with three wins, Martin Wyatt and Les Phillipson two each plus they won the doubles. A rare appearance of Josh Bleakley, back from University saw his team Ramsbottom B beat Seedfield A 9-1 at home. Josh won his three as did Khamal Hussain, Sajied Mohammed two and they won the doubles. David Poytress won the one for Seedfield though Rob Carter was very close to another point when he lost at seventeen in the fifth.

Division 2

Seedfield B improved on their draw in the first half of the season to win 7-3 against Prestwich E. Andy Hamilton was on fine form with three wins for the home team ; his last coming at 22-20 in the fourth against Dave Bolton. Julian Nuttall added two and Stephen Siddall one. Barrie Fleet won two for Prestwich and Dave Bolton one. Prestwich B and the Polish Catholic Club had a ‘test run’ for their Cup Final meeting in a couple of weeks. Though Prestwich lost 4-6 at home they would have won playing with their individual handicaps. Eddie Simon won two, Keith Butler and Alex Waring adding one each. Leaders of the division St.Philips A beat Prestwich C away with Derek Watmough, Dennis Collier and Clive Taylor each winning their three plus the doubles. Dennis is two wins behind Lee Devenport in the race for the top ten spot with two matches to go. Though Prestwich D lost 0-10 to promotion contenders Adelphi they are well away from the relegation zone in their first season in division two after promotion last season. Lee Devenport, Ken Hayes and Tommy Ryan each won their three for the visitors and they won the doubles. Two sets did go to five and four to four so just a few points made all the difference to the result. Bottom team Carlton B look destined to the third division unless they have good wins in their last two matches. Mark Reading won the only set for Carlton who were at home to Wardle A. Paul Howarth won two for Wardle but Duncan Hadfield and Matt Ward won their three and they won the doubles.

Division 3

Seedfield D lost 4-6 at home to Maccabi B. Alan Meltzer was on good form for the visitors winning his three, Dean Clyne two and Frank Sheldon one. Alan Telfer won two for the home team, Phil Cooper one and they won the doubles. Alistair McKernan did not manage to get on the score card for the home team narrowly missing one set at eight in the fifth and another at nine in the fifth. Graham Daniels of Claybank won his three at home against Seedfield C. Claybank added the doubles. John Riley and Mike Nicholls were so close to adding two more points; both lost narrowly in five in two sets. Father and son Frank and Alan Carse won two each for Seedfield as did Mike Charlton. Elton Vale lost 3-7 at home to Stand. Keith Mills, Rodney Hall and Jim Bollard all won one, each beating Steve Morris. Chris Sutcliffe and Dave Jackson won three for Stand and they won the doubles. Hilton YMCA won 7-3 at home to Shawfield A. Whilst Shawfield are at the foot of the table and in relegation danger Wayne Ellis is their star player who consistently wins his three matches has he did this week. The Alan’s Crompton, Cowley and Bradshaw each won two for the home team plus the doubles. ELPM beat their C team 10-0 though there were a few close sets especially Gill Marsden losing at seven in the fifth to John Dawes of the B team. Gerry Faulkner and Mark Willmore were the other winning B team players.

Division 4

Seedfield E are firmly at the foot of the division without a win this season and this week continued their Loosing form when they lost 1-9 to Shawfield C. Peter Gregory, Roger Snowden and Andrew Webster all won their three for the visitors and the home team won the doubles. BGSOB A lost three seven at home to Holmar C. Only Andy Evans managed to get on the score card of the home team with two wins and they won the doubles. Jim Millington won his three for the visitors, Ian Ferrari and Ian McPherson each won two. Holmar B lost 4-6 at home to Prestwich F. Jim Eardley won two for Holmar, Jack Berry one and they won the doubles. Alistair Wakefield won his three for the visitors, Martin Ingram two and Richard Hinchcliffe one. Divisional leaders Holmar A lost 4-6 away to Carlton C with Keith Cheyne clinching the win at 13-11 in the fifth and his third of the night. John Bostock added two wins and Clive Roberts was without a win though two of his sets went to five. David Fletcher won two for Holmar, Geoff Crowther and Phil Wardle one each. Maccabi C beat their D team 7-3 and the score line with two sets to go was 7-1. Louis Samuels won two for the D team and his last set was won at 4 in the 5th. Marc Sheldon also pulled out all the stops to win his last set at 7 in the 5th. Les Suss won his three for the C team, Robert Clayton two, Aubrey Huller one and they won the doubles. Looking to be heading to division three next season and having a chance for the top ten medal St.Sebastians won 7-3 away to Shawfield D who are in relegation danger. Top ten contender Dave Hargreaves won this three for the visitors, Mark Stevens two, Dave Stevens one and they won the doubles. Ashley Ingham won two for Shawfield and Andrew Ingham one.

Division 5

Peter Canter was on fine form for Maccabi E with three wins at home to Shawfield E. Edward Freeman added two plus they won the doubles in a 6-4 win. Lauren Brassington won two for the visitors with Mark Lever and Brian Philip adding one each. Holmar D are in a strong promotion position and their 9-1 win at home against bottom team Seedfield G. Alan Fletcher and Ian Ferrari each won three, Graham Wardle two and they won the doubles. Seedfield’s sole win was from Barry Simpson. Ramsbottom D beat the ‘replacement team, Holmar E 10-0 and look likely to be in division four next season. Neil Booth, Roy Steventon and Paul Wood all won their three and they added the doubles. Graham Wardle just missed out on one point, narrowly losing at 9 in the fifth to Roy Steventon. Shawfield F lost 1-9 at home to BGSOB B. Joshua Fallows won the sole set for the home team against John Rowlands. Graham Hilton and John Greenhalgh won their three and they won the doubles. Five sets went to five but BGSOB B had the edge on the night. Wardle B beat Seedfield F 9-1 where top ten leader David Watts won his three as did Jack Gratton, Neil Bamford two and they won the doubles. Jamie Howarth won the one set for Seedfield.

11th April sees the return of the Closed Championships to Castle Leisure Centre in Bury. A round robin format for the Open Singles event ensures several matches in the early stages before it goes to a straight knockout. The usual doubles, veterans and handicapped events are on offer as well as a welcomed return for the junior event which is open to all who attend Ramsbottom Table Tennis Academy on a Friday evening.
