Bury and District Table Tennis League Week 19 Match Report

Division 1

3rd placed BAE met 9th placed Prestwich A at home and finished with an 8-2 score line. Tony Bates and Tom Smith each won their 3, Tom Lang 1 and they won the doubles. George Jones and Colin Boardman each won 1 for Prestwich. Seedfield A are 7 points clear of relegation but Prestwich A, the team below them are a match in hand. Both teams play each other in the penultimate match of the season so the result may prove crucial for one of them. Seedfield A had a good 8-2 win over ELPM A who look destined for division 2 next season. David Poytress and Gary Skinner each won 3 for Seedfield and Peter Mears 2. Eddie Darlington was the only ELPM player to get on the score card with 1 win plus they won the doubles at 6 in the 5th. Burning Desire lost 1-9 at home to 2nd placed Radcliffe Where Ben Armstrong had the solitary home win against Mick Dore. Current Bury League Champion Graham Jeffries won 3 as did Rob Hall, Mick Dore 2 and they won the doubles. Ramsbottom B clashed with their \b team and drew. Les Phillipson and Martin Wyatt each won 2 for the C team and Dave Kay 1. Keith Jackson and Khamal Hussain each won 2 for the B team and they won the doubles at 8 in the 5th. Carlton Club A lost 4-6 at home to Little Lever. Gary Newton won 2 for the home team, Phil Myers and Ian Quinn 1 each. Steve McNicholas was on top form for the visitors with 3 wins, Ian Lansdale 2 and they won the doubles.

Division 2

Despite having only 2 players Wardle Conservatives A had a creditable draw at home against Prestwich D. Paul Howarth won 3 for the home team and Dennis Bradshaw added 2. For the visitors Andy Evans won 2, Steve Hathaway and Alistair Wakefield 1 each and they won the doubles. Struggling to avoid relegation Prestwich E lost at home 4-6 to mid table St.Philips B. Dave Bolton won his 3 for Prestwich but still finished on the losing side. Only Barrie Fleet was able to add 1 more win. Dave Holden and Ian Wheeldon each won 2 for the visitors, John Biggins 1 and they won the doubles. Divisional leaders St.Philips A had a comfortable 9-1 win at home against Carlton Club B who look destined for division 3 next season. Dennis Collier now shares second place in the top ten with team mate Derek Watmough but Collier has a better percentage. Both players won their 3, Clive Taylor lost to Mark Reading and won 2 and they won the doubles. Marek Maraszkiewicz of Grubba Fans won his 3 but still ended on the losing side. Grubba only had 2 players but did manage to add the doubles and lost 4-6 at home to Prestwich C. Peadar McKinstry, Bryan Beer and Ken Crimes each won 2 for Prestwich including a 10-12, 14-12, 11-9,11-9 win for Marek over Peadar. 3 wins from top ten leader Lee Devenport keeps him 2 clear with only 3 weeks of the season remaining. Tommy Ryan added 2 with Ken Hayes 1 and they won the doubles for a 7-3 win at home against Prestwich B. Eddie Simon won 2 with Keith Butler adding 1. Polish Club won 7-3 at home to Seedfield B where Eddie Kalinowski won 3 for the home team, Mick Hill 2, Ian Byrne 1 and they won the doubles. Julian Nuttall, Stephen Siddall an Andy Hamilton each won 1 for the visitors.

Division 3

Mid table Seedfield C had a draw at home with ELPM C who are the relegation zone and the 5 points may be important by the end of the season. Peter Ingham and Alan Carse each won 2 for the home team and Mike Charlton 1. Gill Marsden and Harry Uren each won 2 for ELPM and they won the doubles. 3 of the 4 sets which went to 5 were won by ELPM. At the opposite end of the division ELPM B look certain to get promotion after a 9-1 over Elton Vale. Mark Willmore and John Dawes won their 3, Steve Greaves dropping the only set of the night to Rodney Hall and ELPM won the doubles. Maccabi B improved their chance for promotion with a 10-0 win at home against Shawfield B. Dean Clyne, Frank Sheldon and Stuart Landes all won their 3 for Maccabi plus they won the doubles. Shawfield A lost 3-7 at home to Claybank where only Wayne Ellis could win for the home team with 2 wins and they won the doubles. Graham Daniels won his 3 for Claybank which keeps him heading the top ten, Mike Nichols and Martin Craven each won 2. Maccabi A beat Hilton YMCA 6-4 at home though the opening match of the night saw Alan Bradshaw sneak the first set at 11 in the 5th for the visitors but the home team reeled off the next 4 sets before eventually closing the match out. Neil Fineberg won 3 for the home team, Melvyn Levene 2 and Frank Sheldon 1. Alan Crompton won 2 for the visitors and Alan Bradshaw 1. Stand beat lowly placed Seedfield D 10-0 at home. Chris Sutcliffe, Dave Jackson and Paul Tatlock all wn 3 for the home team and they won the doubles. Seedfield need some points in the last 3 matches if they are to returning to the 4th division after just one season in this.

Division 4

St.Sebastians beat Seedfield E 10-0 at home and look set for division 3 next season. The regular team of Mark Stevens, Dave Hargreaves and Dave Stevens each won their 3 plus they won the doubles.2nd and 3rd spots in the division played each other and drew. Holmar A at home to Maccabi C look to have the slight edge over Maccabi but the latter has 2 matches in hand. Phil Wardle and top ten leader for most of the season David Fletcher each won 2 and Geoff Crowther 1. Robert Clayton was in fine form for the visitors winning his 3 but only Les Suss could add 1 plus they won the doubles. Prestwich F did not favours to Shawfield D by beating them 10-0 at home which looks like the D team are doomed to relegation. Rod Hughes, Alistair Wakefield and Martin Ingram all won their 3 for Prestwich and they won the doubles. Maccabi D beat BGSOB A who could only field 2 players. Buz Cohen and Marc Sheldon each won 3 for Maccabi, Sheldon Lee 2 and they won the doubles. Andy Evans had the solitary won for BGSOB A. Holmar C lost 2-8 at home to their B team. Only Ian McPherson could get on the card for the C team plus they won the doubles, just at 10 in the 5th. 4 other sets went to 5 but all went the way of the B team where Alan Hibbert and Jim Eardley each won 3 and Martin Archer won 2. Shawfield C lost 0-10 at home to Carlton Club C. John Bostock, Keith Cheyne and Steve Evans all won their 3 for Carlton plus they won the doubles.

Division 5

Shawfield G, a team of juniors had their second win of the season against the team immediately below them. Shawfield won 9-1 where Dean Walmersley and Joshua Fallows each won 3, Lewis Bradley 2 and they won the doubles. Only Jim Murray managed to get on the score card for the home team with 1 win. Close together in the table but an 8-2 win for Seedfield F over Shawfield F was a resounding win for the visitors. Only Mike |Ollerton managed to get on the card for Seedfield and they also won the doubles. Mike Singleton and Alex Braid each won 3 for the visitors and Brian Philip 2. 3 wins for both Graham Hilton and John Greenhalgh sealed victory for BGSOB B at home to Maccabi E. Peter Canter, Bobby Lee and Ashley Landes each won 1 for Maccabi and they won the doubles; just at 8 in the 5th. Shawfield E lost 4-6 to second placed Holmar .Lauren Brassington won 2 for the home team with Mark Lever and Brian Philip each adding 1. Ian Ferrari won his 3 for the visitors Jack Berry 2 and they won the doubles. Ramsbottom D look set to win this division leading by 3 points with a match in hand. Neil Booth was unbeaten for Ramsbottom against Wardle B with Paul Wood and Roy Steventon adding 2 each plus they won the doubles. Top ten leader Dave Watts won the 2 for Wardle B. ELPM D lost 3-7 at home to ‘replacement’ team Holmar E. Lawrence Paynter won 2 for the home side and Antony Vindice 1. They had a tussle in the doubles and narrowly lost 12-14 in the 5th. Graham Wardle Was in good form on the night for the visitors with 3 wins, Nigel Shaw 2, Roger Sallin 1 and they won the doubles.

11th April sees the return of the Closed Championships to Castle Leisure Centre in Bury. A round robin format for the Open Singles event ensures several matches in the early stages before it goes to a straight knockout. The usual doubles, veterans and handicapped events are on offer as well as a welcomed return for the junior event which is open to all who attend Ramsbottom Table Tennis Academy on a Friday evening.
