Bury and District Table Tennis League Week 1 Match Report
Division 1
The first result in was a match between newly promoted Seedfield Methodists A against a new club in the League BAE. Tony Bates made his mark for BAE with 3 fine wins in 3 straight games. Tony was supported by 2 wins each from Tony Smith and Tom Lang. David Poytress was the only winner for Seedfield A at 12-10 in the fifth against Tony Smith of BAE in his first match and he followed that with a further win at 8 in the fifth against Tom Lang. Peter Mears and Rob Carter struggled in their matches at the highest level though Rob had a narrow defeat at 9-11 in the fifth against Tom Lang. After winning the doubles the match finished 8-2 for BAE. Nigel Hallows got his season off to a winning start with 3 wins against Little Lever. Wayne Renton added another win plus Radcliffe won the doubles at 11-9 in the 5th to draw with Little Lever. Ronnie Durose won 2 for Little Lever, losing 11-8 in the 5th to Nigel Hallows with Ian Lansdale winning 2 and Steve McNicholas 1. Prestwich A had a good draw in their first match after promotion last season especially as their opponents had to win the doubles to get the draw. Carlton A just managed that at 18-16 in the 5th .George Jones and Colin Boardman each won 2 for Prestwich and Joe Redikin added the other win. Phil Myers won his 3 for Carlton with Ian Quinn adding the other one. The fixtures did no favours for ELPM A in their first match after promotion when they came up against Ramsbottom A. It’s perhaps no surprise that Ramsbottom won 10-0.Burning Desire met Ramsbottom C away and won 7-3. Ben Armstrong and Steve Barber each won 3 for Burning Desire with Andy Kaye adding the other win. Dave Kay and Martin Wyatt each won 1 plus the doubles.
Division 2
Newly promoted Prestwich D had a good start to a higher division when they drew with St.Philips B. Andy’s, Evans and |McNabb each won 2 for Prestwich and Steve Hathaway added the other win. Ian Wheeldon won 2 for St.Philips and Dave Scowcroft and Dave Holden added 1 each. A new team to the League Grubba Fans A got off to a struggling start when they lost 2-8 away to Wardle Conservative Club A. Paul Howarth had 3 wins for Wardle with Duncan Hadfield and Dennis Bradshaw each adding 2. Kristof Pinter was the only player for Grubba to get on the score card with 2 wins. Relegated from Division 1 last season St.Philips A started the season with a 6-4 win against Adelphi. Dennis Collier and Derek Whatmough each won 2 with new signing Dave Smith adding the other 1 plus they won the doubles. Lee Devenport and Tommy Ryan each won 2 for Adelphi. Carlton B met one of the four Prestwich teams in this division and lost 4-6. Stuart Carter won 2 for Carlton with John Foster and Mark Reading each adding 1. Barrie Fleet won his 3 and Dave Bolton 2 plus the doubles. Prestwich C got off to a fast start to the season with an 8-2 win at home against Polish Catholic Club(formally BAE of last year). Chairman of the League won his 3 with Bryan Beer and Peadar McKinstry each adding 2 and the doubles. Mick Hill and Ian Byrne each won 1 for the losers. Seedfield B had a tough start to their promotion when they lost 1-9 away to Prestwich B. Peadar McKinstry and Andy Evans won 3 for Prestwich with Eddie Simon adding the other 2 plus a tight doubles at 11-2 in the 5th. Andy Hamilton won the sole set for Seedfield.
Division 3
Seedfield C started their season well with a 7-3 win over Maccabi A. Maccabi were fielding two reserves so were struggling from the start. Mike Charlton and Alan Carse were unbeaten for Seedfield with Peter Ingham unable to add to the score. Melvyn Levene, Less Suss and Mark Sheldon each won one for Maccabi. Graham Daniels won 3 for Claybank who were at home to Maccabi B. Martin Nichols added the other 2 wins for Claybank in a 5-5 result with Maccabi. Dean Clyne won 2 for Maccabi with reserve Robert Clayton plus Frank Sheldon adding 1 each. ELPM B had a convincing 9-1 win against Shawfield A with Wayne Ellis managing just the 1 win. Mark Willmore and Steve Greaves each won 3 for ELPM with John Dawes adding the other 2.ELPM C lost 0-10 at home to Shawfield B. Paul Nutter, Terry Shaw and Phil Herd all won their 3 for Shawfield. Relegated last season Elton Vale got of to a win at home to promoted Seedfield D. Dave Hall won 3 with Rodney Hall adding 2 and Jim Bollard 1. Ali McKernan won 2 for Seedfield with Paul Carter adding 1 and the doubles. Hilton YMCA had a 7-3 home win to Stand where Alan Crompton and Alan Cowley won their 3 with Barry Walsh adding the 1. Chris Sutcliffe and Dave Jackson each won 1 for Stand plus the doubles.
Division 4
Holmar C scored an emphatic 10-0 away win against Seedfield Methodists E. Trevor Candler, Ian McPherson and John Millington were on top form for Holmar each winning their 3 plus the doubles. Relegated Holmar A Found it hard going against St.Sebastians who narrowly missed promotion last season. Holmar lost 4-6. Mark Stevens and Dave Hargreaves won 2 each for St. Sebastians with Dave Stevens adding the other win plus they won the doubles. David Fletcher was on fine form for Holmar with 3 wins with Phil Wardle adding the other win. Maccabi C won 7-3 at home to Shawfield D. Robert Clayton won his 3 for Maccabi with Stuart Simpson adding 2 and Aubrey Huller 1 plus the doubles. Ashley Ingham won 2 for Shawfield with Andrew Ingham adding the other 1. Carlton Club C drew at home to Prestwich F where John Bostock was on fine form for the home team winning 3 with Steve Evans and Clive Roberts each adding1. Rod Hughes and Alistair Wakefield won 2 each for Prestwich. Shawfield C had a 7-3 home win to Maccabi D. Peter Gregory won 3 for Shawfield, Andrew Webster 2 and Alistair McIver 1 plus the doubles. It was a very close match with 6 sets going to 5. BGSOG A met Holmar B at home and was on the end of a 4-6 loss. Barry Warburton won 3 and Andy Evans 1 for BGSOB. Alan Hibbert and Jim Eardley won 2 for Holmar with Martin Archer adding.
Division 5
BGSOB B had a flying start to the season when Graham Hilton, John Greenhalgh and John Rowlands each won 3 plus the doubles against Seedfield G. Shawfield G found it difficult in their first match against their F team and lost 1-9 with the doubles being their only success. Mike Singleton, Alex Braid and Barrie Jones each won 3 for the F team. Though home team Holmar D won 8-2 the star attraction was Jamie Howarth of Seedfield F making his debut in the League and beating experienced Alan Fletcher of Holmar who had 1 win. Dave Tarver added the other win for Seedfield. Jack Berry and Ian Ferrari each won 3 for Holmar. Maccabi E drew with new team in the League Ramsbottom D. Peter Canter won 2 for Maccabi and Edward Freeman and Bobby Lee each adding 1 plus the doubles. Paul Wood won his 3 for Ramsbottom with Roy Steventon adding the other 2. Nicholas Kroll was making is debut in the League and had a narrow defeat 7-11 in the 5th against Edward Freeman and had close matches in his 2 other sets. Shawfield E had a convincing 10-0 win at home to ELPM D where Mark Lever, Mike Singleton and Lauren Brassington all won 3 for Shawfield. Grubba Fan B a new team to the League could only field 2 players in their first match at home to Wardle B in a 1-9 defeat. Dave Watts and Harry Barlow each won 3 for Wardle with Neil Bamford adding the other 1.
