Bury and District Table Tennis League Week 5 Match Report

Division 1

Seedfield A struggled at home to top of the division Ramsbottom A lost 0-10 though they did make the visitors work for the doubles with a 16-18 in the 5th game loss. Mick Moir, Mark Ramsbottom and Andy Jackson all won their 3. Prestwich A lost 3-7 at home to Radcliffe CC where Jim Chadwick won 3 for the visitors and Wayne Renton and Rob Hall each added 2. Tristran Swan was the only player to get on the score card for Prestwich with 2 wins plus they won the doubles in 3 straight games. BAE are proving to be strong challengers in their first season in the Bury League and a comprehensive 9-1 win at home against Carlton A helped in their challenge. Tony Bates and Tom Smith each won 3 with Tom Lang winning 2 plus they won the doubles. Only Phil Myers got on the score card for Carlton with the 1 win. Simon Charnley made a welcome return to the Bury League after a number of year’s absence and made an impressive start with 3 wins at home to ELPM A. Khamal Hussain also won his 3 and Martin Wyatt 2. Eddie Darlington was the only ELPM player to get on the score card for the visitor though reserve Steve Greaves stepped up from the 3rd division and just lost 7-11 in the 5th to Martin Wyatt. Carol Mitchell also had a narrow defeat to Khamal Hussain at 4-11 in the 5th. ELPM added the doubles .

Division 2

Prestwich C beat their B team 6-4 where Peadar McKinstry and Bryan Beer were on fine form with 3 wins each. Eddie Simon, Alex Waring and Keith Butler each won 1 for the B team plus they won the doubles. St.Philips A beat an under strength Seedfield B 7-3 at home where Derek Watmough won his 3 for the home team, Dennis Collier 2 and Clive Taylor 1 plus they won the doubles. Stephen Siddall won 2 for Seedfield and reserves Michael Charlton 1 and Paul Carter failed to get on the score card. Carlton B were ‘well and truly battered’ 0-10 said Mark Reading for the losers. Only 2 sets went to 5 which proved that Andy Evans, Andy McNabb and Steve Hathaway were in fine form winning their 3 and they added the doubles. Probably for the first time ever in the Bury League two Polish teams faced each other with the home team, Grubba Fans A coming out on top. Kristof Pinter maintains his top ten leading form by winning his 3 for Grubba in an 8-2 home win against the Polish Club. Damian Bednarski also won his 3 and Lukasz Serdiuk 2. For the Polish Club Eddie Kalinowski was the only player to get on the score card plus they won the doubles. Adelphi had a 7-3 home win against Prestwich E where Lee Devenport and Tommy Ryan were unbeaten for the home team plus Ken Hayes added 1 win. Only Dave Bolton and Barrie Fleet could manage 1 win each for the visitors plus they won the doubles, just at 11-9 in the 5th.

Division 3

Seedfield C won 6-4 at home to Shawfield B where Alan Carse was on fine form for Seedfield with 3 wins. Michael Charlton might have felt his stamina waning after the games he played for the A team on the same night but did win 2 and Seedfield won the doubles. Phil Herd won 2 for Shawfield with Terry Shaw and Paul Nutter winning 1 each. Claybank were without joint top ten leader Graham Daniels and managed a draw against ELPM C. Martin Nichols was in fine form with 3 wins and John Riley added 1 plus they won the doubles. Gill Marsden and Harry Uren each won 2 for ELPM with John Edge adding 1. Wayne Ellis won his 3 for Shawfield A but finished on the losing side in a 3-7 defeat at home to Seedfield D. Phil Cooper, Alistair McKernan and Alan Telfer each won 2 for Seedfield plus they added the doubles. ELPM B kept themselves at the top of the division when they won 9-1 at home to Maccabi B. Mark Wilmore and Steve Greaves each won 3 for ELPM with John Dawes adding 2 and they won the doubles. Only Dean Clyne was able to get on the score card for the losers. Maccabi A Lost 4-6 at home to Stand after the score was 4-4 before Stand reeled off the last 2 sets to win the match. Chris Sutcliffe had 3 wins for Stand with Paul Tatlock adding 2 plus they won the doubles. For the second week in a row Dave Jackson failed to get on the score card. Neil Fineberg won 2 and was narrowly beaten by Chris Sutcliffe 9-11 in the 5th. Robert Williams and Melvyn Levene each won 1.

Division 4

Carlton Club drew at home to Maccabi C where John Bostock won his 3 for the home team and Steve Evans 2. Robert Clayton won 2 for Maccabi, Aubrey Huller and Stuart Simpson 1 each and they won the doubles. Holmar A cemented their position at the top of the division with a 10-0 win at home against Shawfield D. David Fletcher, Geoff Crowther and Phil Wardle all won their 3 for Holmar plus they won the doubles. Seedfield Methodists E started their match against BGSOB A in winning form when Jonathan Fitton beat Andy Evans a 5 in the 5th. Unfortunately that was the only set for Seedfield on the night when Barry and Martyn Warburton each won 3, Andy Evans 2 and they won the doubles. Maccabi D drew at home with Prestwich F. Louis Samuels won 2 for Maccabi with Barry Cohen and Marc Sheldon each winning 1 and they won the doubles. Rod Hughes had 3 good wins for Prestwich and Alistair Wakefield won 2. A convincing 10-0 win at home for St.Sebastians against Holmar C keeps them in 3rd place in the division but with a match in hand. Mark and Dave Stevens plus Dave Hargreaves each won their 3 for the home team though 4 sets went to 4 and 2 went to 5. Shawfield C lost 1-9 at home to Holmar B where reserve Ashley Ingham won the 1 set for Shawfield. Alan Hibbert and Martin Archer each won their 3 for Holmar, Jim Eardley 2 and they won the doubles.

Division 5

Holmar D are unbeaten so far this season and a 10-0 result against Shawfield G this week kept their winning form intact. Alan Fletcher, Ian Ferrari and Graham Wardle were all unbeaten plus they won the doubles. Seedfield G struggled at home against Shawfield F where they lost 1-9. Barry Simpson of Seedfield won their only set at 11-9 in the 5th against Josh Fallows who won 2 for Shawfield with Alex Braid and Mike Singleton winning 3 plus they won the doubles. Grubba Fans B are struggling to field 3 players so far this season and only had 1 regular this week plus 1 guest player. Needless to say the result for their opponents Maccabi E was 10-0. Maintaining his 100% record in 2 matches John Greenhalgh won his 3 for BGSOB B in their match at home against Ramsbottom D though his efforts were only good enough for a draw. Only John Rowlands could add 1 win and they won the doubles. Roy Steventon and Callum Stott won 2 for Ramsbottom with Nicholas Kroll adding the other win. Shawfield E drew at home against Wardle B where David Watts won his customary 3 to keep him top of the averages. Peter Ward added 1 more win for Wardle plus they won the doubles. Mark Lever and Eric Holmes each won 2 for Shawfield and Lauren Brassington won 1.ELPM D lost 3 -7 at home to Seedfield F though Laurence Paynter won his 3 for the home team. Mike Ollerton, Steven Greenall and Dave Tarver each won 2 for the visitors plus they won the doubles.
