Bury and District Table Tennis League Week 8 Match Report

Division 1

Little Lever held Carlton Club A to a draw at home despite 3 wins from Ronnie Durose of the home team. Steve McNicholas added 2 but Roy Costello failed to get on the score card. Kim Barnard made her first appearance for Carlton A and had 1 win along with Kevin Chapman. Phil Myers won 2 plus Carlton won the doubles. A very close tussle between Ramsbottom B&C which ended in a last set draw with Graham Hoy showing some of his skills of yesteryear with 3 fine wins. This included a last set win which got the draw at 11-8 in the 5th against Terry Taylor. Martin Wyatt and Les Phillipson each added 1 for the C team. Terry Taylor and Khamal Hussain each won 2 with Mandy Winskill struggling to get on the score card but took Graham Hoy to 5 games. Radcliffe CC proved too strong for visitors Burning Desire where Jake Shaw and Wayne Renton won their 3, Jim Chadwick 2 and they won the doubles. The only win for the visitors was in the first set where Ben Armstrong beat Jim Chadwick 13-11 in the 5th. Prestwich A, struggling next to the bottom of the division came up against BAE who are currently 3rd and lost 2-8. George Jones for the home team won the 2 sets for Prestwich, both in 5 sets. 2nd division reserve Steve Hathaway did manage to take a game off Tom Lang but eventually lost in 4. Joe Redikin also took a game off Tony Smith but again lost in 4. Tony Bates has still only lost 1 set this season and currently heads the individual averages. He won his 3, Tom Lang and Tony Smith won 2 each and they also won the doubles. The clash of the two promoted teams from division 2 last year ended in a one sided affair with Seedfield A winning 9-1 away to ELPM D. Carol Mitchell was the only player for the home team to get on the score card when she beat Peter Mears and this result leaves them firmly at the foot of the division. David Poytress and Gary Skinner each won their 3 for Seedfield and they won the doubles and are currently 9th in the division. Ramsbottom A are firmly at the top of the division and their 9-1 at home to Hilton Bury helped to increase their lead. Though with 100% records Mick Moir and Andy Jackson are 2 wins away from the top of the averages because they have played 1 match less. Tony Bates from BAE leads. Mick and Andy won their 3 and reserve Graham Young added 2 plus they won the doubles. The first set of the night went the way of the visitors when Callan Tollady beat Graham Young at 7 in the 5th.

Division 2

Wardle A continued their fine form this season with a 7-3 win away to Prestwich D which kept them at the top of Division 2. Matt Ward had 3 wins to keep his 100% results intact, Paul Howarth and Duncan Hadfield each added 2. Andy McNabb was the only Prestwich player to register wins with 2 and they also won the doubles. Seedfield Methodists B had a resounding 8-2 win at home to Polish Catholic Club where Julian Nuttall and Andy Hamilton were unbeaten for the home team. Stephen Siddall added 1 win plus they won the doubles. Mick Hill and Eddie Kalinowski each won 1 for the visitors who signed the bottom of the score card saying they were well beaten. 4 sets did go all the distance but Seedfield won them all. Prestwich B faced Adelphi at home and ended up losing 3-7. Ken Hayes was in good form for the visitors with 3 wins, Top Ten Contender Lee Devenport 2 and Tommy Ryan 2. Keith Butlers win on the night was a very tight match which he beat Lee Devenport 11-9 in the 5th. Eddie Simon beat Tommy Ryan of Adelphi at 11-6 in the 4th. The match was heading for a draw with Prestwich 3-4 down but then failed to win another set. Peadar McKinstry was the only Prestwich C player to get on the score card in their home match against Grubba Fans A which was the first set of the night won 11-9 in the 4th. Though there were some very tight games Grubba were always on top which shows why Kristof Pinter is at the top of the averages with only 2 defeats so far this season. He won his 3 along with Lukasz Serdiuk, Damian Bednarski 2 and they won the doubles. Carlton B continues their poor form this season without a win and lost again this week at home 2-8 to St.Philips A. Mark Reading was the only Carlton player to get on the score card with 2 wins. St.Philips A are currently 2nd in the division. Dennis Collier won 3, Derek Watmough and Clive Taylor 2 each plus they won the doubles. St. Philips B won by the same score line as their A team, 8-2 at home to Prestwich E. John Biggins was in fine form winning his 3 for the home team, Ian Wheeldon and Gareth Palmer 2 plus they won the doubles. Dave Bolton was the only Prestwich player to score with 2 wins; one at 11-8 in the 5th against Gareth Palmer.

Division 3

Seedfield D played Stand at home and at 4-4 it was looking like a home win for Seedfield but Stand won the last two sets to win the match 6-4. Chris Sutcliffe won 3 for Stand with Dave Jackson adding 2 plus they won the doubles. Alistair McKernan won 2 for the home team and \phil Cooper and Alan Telfer each won 1. 3 fine wins for Wayne Ellis of Shawfield A wasn’t enough to beat home team Claybank when they went down 4-6. Ernie Watkins added the other win for Shawfield against John Riley of Claybank at 11-9 in the 4th. Graham Daniels lost only his second set of the season to Wayne Ellis at 11-13 in the 4th. Graham had 2 wins along with Mike Nicholls and John Riley 1 plus they won the doubles. ELPM B maintained their strong hold at the top of the division with a 10-0 beating away to Elton Vale. Steve Greaves, Mark Willmore and John Dawes were all in fine form winning their 3 plus they won the doubles. The only glimmer for Elton was with Kith Mills who narrowly lost to both Greaves and Dawes at 5 in the 5th. Gill Marsden had 3 good wins for ELPM C to help them to a home win against Seedfield C. John Edge added 2 and Harry Uren 1. Mike Charlton won 2 for the visitors, Peter Ingham 1 and they won the doubles. Hilton YMCA kept their pressure on a promotion slot but could only manage a draw with Maccabi A where Neil Fineberg had 3 fine wins for the visitors. Robert Williams and Melvyn Levine each added 1. Loosing a set for the first time was top ten leader Alan Cowley when he lost to Neil Fineberg. Only Alan Crompton could add to the wins with 2 plus they won the doubles.

Division 4

Carlton Club C had a resounding 8-2 win at home to Shawfield C where Keith Cheyne and John Bostock each won their 3, Clive Roberts 1 and they won the doubles. Peter Gregory and Andrew Webster each won 1 of Shawfield. BGSOB A had a 7-3 home win against Maccabi D. Barry and Martyn Warburton each won 3, Andy Evans struggled on the night without a win and they won the doubles. Barry Cohen, Less Suss and Marc Sheldon each won 1 for Maccabi. St.Sebastians continued their good form this season chasing promotion and had a 7-3 away win to Seedfield E. Mark Stevens and Dave Hargreaves each won their 3 with Dave Stevens adding 1. For Seedfield Jonathan Fitton and Keith Stott each won 1 plus they won the doubles. Holmar B faced their C team and lost 3-7 were Ian McPherson had 3 fine wins. Jack Berry was heading for his 3rd win when leading 5-0 in the 5th against Alan Hibbert but lost narrowly. John Millington added the other win plus the doubles for the \c team. Alan Hibbert won 2 for the B team and Martin Archer 1. Maccabi C lost 3-7 at home to Holmar A where Robert Clayton was the only player to get on the score card for the home team with 2 wins. Phil Wardle for Holmar had 3 fine wins and David Fletcher dropped only his 3rd set of the season in a very close match where Robert Clayton won 11-6 in the 5th. Geoff Crowther also won 2, his 3rd at 11-6 in the 5th against Les Suss. Shawfield D drew at home to Prestwich F with Andrew Ingham winning his 3 for the home team. Barry Collier and reserve Mark Lever each added 1. Richard Hinchcliffe and Alistair Wakefield each added 2 for Prestwich plus they won the doubles.

Division 5

Shawfield G, a junior team in the League won only their second match of the season 6-4 against Seedfield G. Michael Eaton and James Aadachi each won 2, Sam Burgoyne 1 and they won the doubles. Seedfield G just 1 place above them in the division have only won once this season so far. Barry Simpson won his 3 and Jim Murray added the other win. Maccabi E beat BGSOB B at home 6-4 despite 3 wins for Graham Hilton of Bury Grammar and John Greenhalgh adding the other win. Peter Cantor and Edward Freeman each won 2 for Maccabi, Gary Freeman 1 and they won the doubles. Holmar D lost 4-6 at home to Shawfield E where Mark Lever won his 3 for Shawfield, Eric Holmes 2 and they won the doubles. Lauren Brassington unusually failed to get on the score card for Shawfield but they won the doubles to get the win. Graham Wardle won 2 for Holmar, Jack Berry and Alan Fletcher each added 1. Grubba Fans B won 6-4 at home despite only having two players. Grzegorz Greda won his 3 for Grubba and Laszlo Fieszl added 2 plus they won the doubles against ELPM D. Lawrence Paynter won 2 for the visitors with Anthony Vindice and Mario Piazza each won 1. Despite a lot of close games Wardle B lost 2-8 at home to Ramsbottom D despite losing to Neil Booth Dave Watts retained joint top position in the averages by winning the only two sets for the home team. New signing Neil Booth won his 3 again for Ramsbottom and Paul Wood lost his first set of the season to Dave Watts but won 2 as did Roy Steventon. This result keeps Ramsbottom firmly in 2nd place in the division. Shawfield F lost 4-6 at home to Seedfield F with Barry Jones winning 2 for the home team, Mike Singleton and Joshua Fallows 1 each. Mike Ollerton won his 3 for Seedfield with Dave Tarver adding 2 plus the doubles.
