Bury and District Table Tennis League Week 11 Match Report

Division 1

At the half way stage in the season new club BAE have established themselves will into the League by being in 3rd place in the tables and Tony Bates challenging for the averages. They beat Little Lever 7-3 at home this week and Tony Smith was in good form winning 3 for the home team with Tony Bates winning 2, Tom Lang 1 plus they won the doubles. Steve McNicholas won 2 for Little Lever and Ronnie Durose 1. Struggling Seedfield Methodists A lost 2-8 at home to Ramsbottom C. David Poytress and Rob Carter each won 1 for the home team, Martin Wyatt was in good form for Ramsbottom winning his 3 including his opening set against David Poytress which he just won 11-6 in the 5th. Dave Kay and Les Phillipson each won 2 plus they won the doubles. Prestwich A moved above Seedfield Methodists A with fine 8-2 win at Burning Desire. Tristran Swan won 3 and had good support from George Jones & Colin Boardman who each won 2. The newly signed Phil Riley won 2 for Burning Desire.

Division 2

Struggling Prestwich E faced their D team at home and lost 3-7. Dave Bolton won 2 for the E team and they won the doubles. Andy Evans was undeteated on the night with 3 wins for the D team with Andy McNabb and Steve Hathaway each winning 2. St Philips A bounced back from their defeat by Grubba Fans to inflict a second defeat of the season League leaders Wardle Conservatives A. Three wins from Denis Collier, supported by 2 from Derek Watmough & 1 from Clive Taylor plus a doubles win produced a 7-3 victory. This win reduces Wardle’s lead to 2 points at the halfway stage of the season. Grubba Fans kept up their good run with 7-3 victory over Seedfield Methodists B with both Kristof Pinter & Marek Maraszkiewicz winning 3. Kristof’s had a narrow victory over Andy Hamilton, winning 14-12 in the 5th, his 3 wins mean that he is the leading player in the Division going into the second half of the season. Prestwich B won 7-3 at St Philips B with Alex Waring, Keith Butler & Eddie Simon each recording 2 wins plus a doubles victory. Gareth Palmer won the 3 sets for St Philips B. Adelphi strengthened their hold on 4th spot with an 8-2 victory over Prestwich C with Lee Devenport undefeated on the night. Prestwich’s wins came from victories for Peadar McKinstry & Ken Crimes over Tommy Ryan & Ken Hayes respectively.

Division 3

Seedfield C beat Shawfield A 8-2 at home where Alan Carse won his 3 with team mates Peter Ingham and Mike Charlton each winning 2 plus they won the doubles. Only Wayne Ellis could get on the score card for Shawfield with 2 wins which keeps him at the top of the averages. ELPM B had a convincing 9-1 win over Hilton YMCA which reinforces their place at the top of the Division. John Dawes & Steve greaves each won 3 with Gerry Faulkner contributing 2. Alan Crompton won 1 for Hilton YMCA to prevent a whitewash.

Division 4

Holmar A continued their good form this season by leading in the tables and in the averages as well. They had an 8-2 win at home to Shawfield C where David Fletcher and Phil Wardle each won their 3, Geoff Crowther 1 and they won the doubles. Peter Gregory and Roger Snowden each won 1 for Shawfield. Prestwich F lost 3-7 at home to Maccabi C. Alistair Wakefield won 2 and Rod Hughes won 1 for the home team. Robert Clayton, Barry Cohen and Les Suss each won 2 plus they won the doubles. St.Sebastians continue their quest for promotion by being just two points behind leaders Holmar A at the half way stage. Dave Hargreaves of St.Sebastians is also joint top ten leader with David Fletcher with the same wins and losses. His 3 wins this week with Mark Stevens plus the doubles gave them a 7-3 win at home to Holmar B. Alan Hibbert, Martin Archer and Jim Eardley each won 1 for the visitors. Seedfield E continued their struggle at the foot of the table and this week’s match was no different as they lost away 0-10 to Maccabi D. Barry Cohen, Louis Samuels and Marc Sheldon all won their 3 for Maccabi and they won the doubles. Middle of the table Holmar C just edged a home win against Carlton Club C who are 1 point above the home team. Jack Bostock won his 3 for Carlton but only Keith Cheyne could add 1 more win. Ian McPherson and Jack Berry won 2 each for Holmar, Trevor Candler 1 and they won the doubles. Shawfield D recorded a welcome 6-4 win over BGSOB A. Ashley Ingham picked up 3 wins with Barry Collier winning 2 & Andy Ingham 1 for the winners. Barry Warburton with 2 & Martyn Warburton 1 were the winners for BGSOB A with a doubles win for them also.

Division 5

Seedfield F had an easy 10-0 win at home to bottom team Shawfield G. Mike Ollerton, Dave Tarver and Jamie Howarth all won their 3 for Seedfield plus they won the doubles. Seedfield G continued their season without a win and lost this week 0-10 to Shawfield E. Mark Lever, Brian Philip and Lauren Brassington each won their 3 for the visitors plus they won the doubles. The match between the top 2 in the Division was a tight match. Ramsbottom D took a 5-1 lead but Holmar D won the next 3 to take it to 5-4. In the final set was won by Neil Booth, his third win of the night to give Ramsbottom victory. Callum Stott won 2 & doubles win saw them home. Holmar’s 4 wins came with 2 to Neil Cowburn and 1 each for Jack Berry & Ian Ferrari. This win sees Ramsbottom take a one point lead into the second half of the season. BGSOB B had a fine win 7-3 over Wardle Conservative B with Graham Hilton unbeaten & 2 wins each for John Greenhalgh & John Rowlands. Wardle’s Dave Watts had 2 wins with a victory in the doubles. The 2 wins for Dave Watts ensured that he goes into the second half of the season as the top team leader.
