DIVISION ONE

 

Relegated last season were Seedfield A but a team dropped out of the division at the last moment so Seedfield went back up. They played their first match at home to newly promoted Adelphi TTC and the match ended in a draw. There were some close sets including the doubles that Adelphi just edged at eleven in the fifth. The doubles gave Adelphi at 4-2 lead but Seedfield rallied to win the next three only to lose the last set of the night to get the draw. Peter Mears and Rob Carter each won two for Seedfield and David Poytress one. For Adelphi Lee Devenport and Tommy Ryan each won two and they won the doubles. Carlton A met the ‘multi’ division one champions in their first outing of the season and lost 2-8. Ian Quinn and Phil Myers each beat Graham Young of Ramsbottom A. Mick Moir and Andy Jackson won their three and they won the doubles. Prestwich A got their new season under way with a very strong home 8-2 win over Burning Desire who finished eight points ahead of them last year. George Jones was on fine form with three wins, David Pegg two and new signing Duncan Hadfield also with two. Prestwich added the doubles. Only Barry Elliot could get on the score card for Burning Desire who won the two points for his team. Ramsbottom C lost 8-2 at home to Little Lever. Three sets went to five, all in the favour of the visitors where Ronnie Durose and Ian Lansdale each won their three with Steve McNicholas adding two. Only Martyn Wyatt managed to get on the score card for the home side with one win, the first of the night against Steve McNicholas.

 

DIVISION TWO

 

Prestwich D, one of four teams from Prestwich in this division had a resounding 8-2 win over Maccabi A who won promotion last year. Craig Bradbury and Paul Howarth won their three for Prestwich and Steve Hathaway added two more. Alan Meltzer was the only Maccabi player to get on the score card and they won the doubles. Prestwich C beat newly promoted Stand 7-3 at home. Eddie Simon started his season well with three wins for Prestwich, Joe Redikin added two, Peadar McKinstry one and they won the doubles. Chris Sutcliffe had two wins for Stand and Dave Jackson one. The Polish Club beat Carlton B 7-3 at home. Eddie Kalinowski for the home team won his three, Mick Hill and Ian Byrne each added two.  Jim Bloomfield and Mark Reading each won one for the visitors plus the doubles. Their third player John Foster was unlucky not to get on the score card when he lost 11-12, 11-13, 16-18, 5-13, 8-11.

 

DIVISION THREE

 

Seedfield C played Elton Vale Sports Club at home and lost the last set of the night to lose 4-6. Four sets went to five and they were shared two for each team. David Hall was on fine form for the visitors with three wins, Rodney Hall two and a critical doubles at eleven in the fifth. Frank Carse won two for Seedfield with Peter Ingham and Michael Charlton adding one each. The other club playing at Elton Vale is the Table Tennis Club won were formally Claybank. They had an even better start to the season albeit against a team with two reserves when the won 9-1 at home. Graham Daniela and Martin Nicholls did all the damage with three wins each, Mark Craven added two and they won the doubles against Seedfield D. Alistair McKernan was the only regular playing in this team and he had the one win over Mark Craven. Promoted team St.Sebastians struggled in this higher division in their first match of the season and lost 4-6 away to Shawfield B. Wayne Ellis was on his usual top form and won his three, Dave Stubbington and Ernie Watkins each won one and they won the vital doubles to secure the win. Dave Hargreaves and Dave Stevens each won two with Alan Scholes struggling and didn’t get on the score card. The two ELPM teams met each other and drew 5-5. Mark Willmore was in the best form with three wins for the B team. Steve Greaves added one and they won the doubles. John Edge and Gill Marsden each won two for the C team and John Barker added one.

 

DIVISION FOUR

 

Seedfield E struggled at home to Maccabi D and ended up losing 2-8. Only Jonathan Fitton could get on the score card for Seedfield with two wins. Marc Sheldon was the star player on the night with three wins for Maccabi, Buz Cohen and Aubrey Huller adding two plus they won they doubles. Bury Grammar A beat Holmar C 7-3 at home. Barry Warburton won three, Andy Evans two, Martyn Warburton one and they won the doubles. Ian Ferrari won two for the visitors and Jack Berry one. Shawfield E lost heavily in their first match of the season at home to Prestwich F. Rod Hughes and Alistair Wakefield each won three for the visitors, Ian Connell two and they won the doubles. Only Lauren Brassington managed the one win for the home team.

 

DIVISION FIVE

 

Holmar E had a father and daughter line up with John and Alison Heyes. John won his three in his first match in the Bury League and regular in the team, Nigel Shaw also added three. Alison found the going tough in her first match and didn’t manage a win. Jim Murray, Graham Wright and John Duxbury each won one for the visitors. New team and new players in Maccabi F beat Seedfield F 6-4 at home. The match was poised at 4-4 with two sets to play and Maccabi showed their strength to take both of these without dropping any games. There were a couple of tight sets were Jack Nesbit of Maccabi beat Steve Greenall 12-10 in the fifth and the doubles were ‘pinched’ by Seedfield also at 12-10 in the fifth. Alan Nesbit came out with three wins for Maccabi, Jack Nesbit two and Yoni Morrison one. Mike Ollerton won two for Seedfield, Alan Simpson one plus they won the doubles. Wardle had a comprehensive 8-2 win at home against ELPM D. David Watts won his customary three, Harry Barlow and Jack Gratton two and they won the doubles.  Lawrence Paynter and Antony Vindice each won one for the visitors. Maccabi E had the best start to their season with a 9-1 win at home to Shawfield F. Peter Canter and Edward Freeman each won their three, Bobby Lee two and they won the doubles. Only Jason Wild could make the score card with one win for Shawfield.

 

*Two more new teams to this division met each other at Ramsbottom TT Academy who just lost 4-6 to Prestwich G. There were four sets that went to five and a further two to four in a very close fought match. Ian Ross for Prestwich came out on top with three wins including a very entertaining match against Tom Warburton which Ian won 12-10 in the fifth. Martin Ingram added two and they won the doubles. Callum Stott won two for the home team including a very tight match against match against Martin Ingram which Callum won 11-7 in the fifth. Nick Kroll and Tom Warburton each one.
