Bury and District Table Tennis League Week 22 Match Report

Division 1

Radcliffe played the divisional winners Ramsbottom A at home and lost 4-6. Rob Hall won two for Radcliffe and Graham Jeffries and Mick Dore each added one. Mick Moir won his three to secure the top ten place for the ninth time and lost just one set all season which was to Jake Shaw of Radcliffe. Andy Jackson won two and they won the doubles. Reserve Josh Bleakley failed to get a win but was very close against Graham Jeffries losing at 11 in the fifth and Mick Dore losing 10 in the fifth. Ramsbottom have now won division one SEVENTEEN times and this win is the eleventh in a row. At the other end of the division ELPM A are back in the second division next season and lost 4-6 at home this week to Hilton Bury. Andy McCheyne, Eddie Darlington and Carol Mitchell each won one for the home team plus the doubles. George Brennand was on good form for the visitors with three wins, Callan Tolladay two and Bill Russell one. Little Lever lost 1-9 against BAE at home and it was Ronnie Durose with the sole win for Little Lever against Tony Smith who won two for BAE. Tony Bates and Tom Lang won their three and they won the doubles. Ramsbottom B beat Carlton Club A 6-4 at home with Khamal Hussain being on the best form with three wins for the home team. Martin Wyatt and Sajied Mohammed both adding one each and they won the doubles. Phil Myers and Ian Quinn each won two for Carlton. Prestwich A had a good 6-4 win at home against Burning Desire where Tristran Swann was the star for the home team winning his three, Colin Boardman two and George Jones one. Barry Elliot won two for the visitors, Ben Armstrong one and they won the doubles. Sic out of the ten sets went to five including the first of the night which Ben Armstrong sneaked at 13 in the fifth against George Jones. Four of the six were won by the home team in a match where some great games were reported.

Division 2

Seedfield B ended their first season in this division with a 6-4 win against Grubba Fans at home. Julian Nuttall and Andy Hamilton each won two, Stephen Siddall one and they won the doubles. Marek Maraszkiewicz was on top form for the visitors winning his three all in three straight and Lukasz Dudziak added one. Prestwich D beat their E team 8-2 and confirms their E team’s relegation spot. Andy Evans won his three for the home team, Steve Hathaway and Craig Bradbury two each and they won the doubles. Dave Bolton and Barrie Fleet each won one for the E team. Four of the sets went to five and three went to four. Prestwich B beat St.Philips B 6-4 at home. Eddie Simon and Alex Waring each won two, Keith Butler one and the doubles. Dave Scowcroft won his three for the visitors and John Biggins added one. Prestwich C lost 2-8 at home to promotion contenders Adelphi who now have to wait to see how Wardle A fair in their last two matches. Peadar McKinstry and Ken Crimes each won one for the home team. Lee Devenport has sealed his top ten medal with three wins this week for the visitors, Tommy Ryan also won three, Ken Hayes one and they won the doubles. St.Philips A beat Wardle A 7-3 at home which could have spoilt Wardle’s chance of promotion who need an 8-2 win in their last match to finish runners up. Dennis Collier won his three for the home team which secured his runner up spot in the top ten. Derek Watmough added two, Clive Taylor one and the doubles. Wardle could only field two players; Duncan Hadfield winning two and Simon King one.

Division 3

Claybank drew 5-5 at home to Stand where top ten leader Graham Daniels lost to Chris Sutcliffe at 8 in the fourth and won his other two. That loss didn’t affect his lead and he wins this division top ten which he also won in 1999 and 2008. Mike Nicholls also won two and John Riley one. Chris Sutcliffe won his three on the night with Dave Jackson adding one plus they won the doubles. Shawfield A lost 3-7 at home to Seedfield C and Wayne Ellis was the only home team player to get on the score card with three wins. These wins tie the top ten but Wayne has lost ten sets whereas Graham Daniels lost only seven. Alan Carse, Peter Ingham and Mike Charlton each won two for the visitors and they won the doubles. Elton Vale beat Shawfield B 7-3 at home where Frank Green was in fine form winning his three for Elton, Keith Mills and Rodney Hall each added two. Only Terry Shaw could get on the score card for Shawfield and they won the doubles at nine in the fourth. ELPM C lost 2-8 at home with only two players against divisional runners up Maccabi B. John Edge won the sole singles for the home team with a win against Frank Sheldon. ELPM also won the doubles. Dean Clyne and Alan Meltzer each won three for Maccabi and Frank Sheldon two.

Division 4

Holmar B beat top team St.Sebastians with Alan Hibbert, Martin Archer and Jim Eardley each won two for Holmar and they won the doubles. Dave Hargreaves was too good on the night and won his three for the visitors and secured his top ten spot as well as divisional winners. Alan Scholes made a return appearance after a long absence but could not quite manage to get on the score card. Third placed Carlton Club C consolidated their position with an 8-2 win at home against Holmar C. John Bostock won his three, Keith Cheyne and Steve Evans two and they won the doubles. Only Ian McPherson could manage the two wins for the visitors. Shawfield C lost 3-7 at home to Holmar A. Peter Gregory won two for the home team and Roger Snowden one. David Fletcher finished off the season with three wins which kept him as runner up in the top ten. Phil Wardle added two, Geoff Crowther one and they won the doubles. BGSOB A drew at home with Shawfield D. Barry Warburton won his three for the home team and Andy Evans added two. Ashley Ingham won two for Shawfield, Barry Collier and Andrew Ingham one each and they won the doubles. Seedfield E lost 2-8 at home to Maccabi D where only Jonathan Fitton managed a singles win for the home team against Louis Samuels and Seedfield won the doubles. Marc Sheldon and Sheldon Lee each won three for the visitors and Louis Samuels added two.

Division 5

Maccabi E beat ELPM D 7-3 at home. Peter Canter won three, Bobby Lee and Edward Freeman two each. Anthony Vince and Lawrence Paynter each won one for the visitors and they won the doubles. Shawfield G lost 1-9 at home to Seedfield F where Joshua Fallows recorded the only win for the home team against Steve Greenall who won two for the visitors. Mike Ollerton and Jamie Howarth each won their three and they won the doubles. Holmar E were too good on the night for Shawfield F and won 8-2 at home. Nigel Shaw and Graham Wardle each won three, Dave Bell one and they won the doubles. Mike Singleton and Alex Braid won one each for the visitors. In a clash of the top two teams Holmar D who finish runners up beat the top team Ramsbottom D to inflict their only defeat of the season on them. In an all round team effort for Holmar Jack Berry, Ian Ferrari and Neil Cowburn each won two and they won the doubles. Paul Wood won two, Callum Stott one and for only the second time this season Roy Steventon failed to get on the score card. The last time was also against Holmar D. Shawfield E beat Seedfield G 10-0 at home where Mark Lever, Brian Philip and Laura Brassington each won three and the doubles. In winning his three Mark Lever ‘snatches’ the top ten from David Watts of Wardle B who has led the averages all season and did not play in their last match. Wardle B lost 1-9 against an on form BGSOB B where Graham Hilton and John Greenhalgh each won three, John Rowlands two and the doubles.

Sunday sees the return of our Closed Championships to the Castle Leisure Centre in Bury for the first time in over 15 years. There is a large entry of 86 and matches will be taking place from 9am in the main hall on 13 tables. All the finals plus the annual prize presentation will take place on Tuesday 20th April at Elton Vale Sports Club starting at 7pm. Spectators are welcome to both events.
