Bury and District Table Tennis League Week 8 Match Report

Division 1

BAE lost their first match of the season to Hilton Bury and drop to 3rd place in the table. Tony Bates did win his 3 for BAE but only Pete Bradford could add to their wins. Rob Wylie and Bill Russell each won 2 for Hilton, George Brennand 1 and they added the doubles. Moving up to 2nd place by virtue of their 10-0 win against Seedfield A were Radcliffe CC. Wayne Renton, Jim Chadwick and Rob Hall all won their 3 plus the doubles. Rob Carter put up a valiant effort for Seedfield losing 3-11 in the 5th to Wayne Renton. 4 other sets went to 4 but Radcliffe was too strong on the night. Ramsbottom C beat struggling ELPM A 9-1 at home where reserve Steve Greaves had a fine win for the visitors in three straight sets over Martin Wyatt. Dave Kay and Les Phillipson each won their 3 for Ramsbottom. The Ramsbottom A team had the same score line but away to Carlton A. Mark Ramsbottom and new signing Jeff Craighill each won their 3 for Ramsbottom and Khamal Hussain added 2 plus the doubles. Phil Myers won the 1 for Carlton. Burning Desire lost 4-6 at home to Little Lever though Steve Barber was on fine form for the home team winning his 3. Ben Armstrong added the other win. Ronnie Durose and Roy Costello each won 2 for the visitors, Ian Lansdale 1 plus they won the doubles. Prestwich A lost 1-9 at home to Ramsbottom B where reserve Andy Evans had a fine win over Khamal Hussain for their only win. Brain Clements and Tim Ternent each won 3 for Ramsbottom, Khamal 2 and they won the doubles.

Division 2

Wardle Conservatives A lead this division and their 9-1 win at home against Prestwich B did no harm to their promotion efforts. Mat Ward and Paul Howarth each won their 3 for Wardle, Dennis Bradshaw 2 and they won the doubles. Only Eddie Simon managed to get on the scorecard for Prestwich with 1 win. Adelphi won 7-3 at home against Seedfield B where Ken Hayes won his 3 for the home team, Lee Devenport 2, Bernard Davies 1 and they won the doubles. Julian Nuttall won 2 for Seedfield and Andy Hamilton 1. St. Philips A proved too strong for visitors Prestwich D and won 8-2. Dennis Collier won 3 for the home team, Derek Watmough and Dave Smith 2 and they won the doubles. Andy’s Evans and McNabb each won 1 for Prestwich. With only an handful of points separating the top six teams in the division Prestwich C did their promotion chances no harm when the convincingly won 10-0 at home to an under strength Carlton Club B. Ken Crimes, Peadar McKinstry and Bryan Beer each won their 3 plus the doubles. Also in the top six are Grubba Fans A who also won 10-0 at home to Prestwich E. Marek Maraszkiewicz, Damian Bednarski and Kukasz Serdiuk each won their 3 for the home team.

Division 3

ELPM B had a resounding 9-1 win at home to Seedfield D and the result puts them at the top of the division. Mark Willmore and John Dawes each won 3 for ELPM, Gerry Faulkner 2 and they won the doubles. Alan Telfer won the 1 for Seedfield at 6 in the 5th against Gerry Faulkner. Seedfield C lost 4-6 at home to Elton Vale though Alan Carse won his 3 for the home team. They only managed to add the doubles. Dave Hall, Keith Mills and Rod Hall each won 2 for Elton. A closely fought bottom of the table match between home team Shawfield A against ELPM C saw the visitors win 6-4. Wayne Ellis won his 3 for the losers and they also added the doubles. Gillian Marsden, John Edge and Harry Uren each won 2 for ELPM. 3 sets went to 5 and a further 3 went to 4. A clash of Maccabi A against their B team saw the B team win 7-3 despite 3 wins from Neil Fineberg for the A teams only wins. Dean Clyne, Alan Meltzer and Frank Sheldon each won 2 for the B team plus they won the doubles.

Division 4

Struggling Seedfield E lost 1-9 at home to Carlton Club C where Jonathan Fitton won the 1 for the home team. Steve Evans and Keith Cheyne won 3 for Carlton, Clive Roberts 2 and they won the doubles. Top of the Division Holmar A could only manage a draw at home to BGSOB A. David Fletcher lost his first 2 sets of the season but remained at the top of the averages. Geoff Crowther won 1 as well; Phil Wardle 2 and they won the doubles. Barry Warburton and Andy Evans each won 2 for Bury Grammar and Martyn Warburton 1. Holmar B beat Maccabi D 6-4 away where Alan Hibbert had 3 fine wins for the visitors. Martin Archer and Jim Eardley each won 1 plus they won the doubles. Barry Cohen and Louis Samuels each won 2 for Maccabi. The final set of the night proved crucial when Alan Hibbert won his 3rd of the night a 3 in the 5th to edge the win. Shawfield C lost 4-6 at home to Maccabi C where Les Suss was on fine form for the visitors with 3 wins, Robert Clayton 2 and Edward Freeman 1. Peter Gregory won 2 for the home team, Andrew Webster 1 and they won the doubles. St.Sebastians lost for the first time this season to a changed Prestwich F team though they still retained joint second place in the Division. Reserve Richard Hinchcliffe won his 3 for Prestwich, regular player Alistair Wakefield 2 and Martin Ingham 1. St.Sebastians Dave Hargreaves won 2, Mark Stevens 1 and they won the doubles. Holmar C easily beat Shawfield D 9-1 at home where Ian McPherson and John Millington won their 3 for Holmar, Trevor Candler 2 and they won the doubles. Only Ashley Ingham managed a win for Shawfield in straight games over Trevor Candler.

Division 5

Holmar D proved why they are top of the division with a 9-1 win away to Maccabi E. Jack Berry and Ian Ferrari each won 3 for the visitors, Alan Fletcher 2 and they won the doubles. Only Edward Freeman managed 1 win for Maccabi. BGSOB B player John Greenhalgh won his 3 but finished on the losing side 3-7 at home to Seedfield F. Mike Ollerton, Jamie Howarth and Steve Greenall each won 2 for the visitors plus they won the doubles. Ramsbottom Town D maintained their second place in the division with a comfortable 10-0 at home to Shawfield F. Callum Stott, Roy Steventon and new signing Neil Booth each won their 3 for Ramsbottom plus they won the doubles. ELPM D was at home to Wardle B and lost 3-7. Lawrence Paynter was in fine form for ELPM winning his 3 including an 11-9 win in the fifth game against top ten leader David Watts. Lawrence was 0-2 in games down to Watts and won the next three games 9, 8 and 9 which was only the second defeat of the season so far for Watts.
