Division 1 Handicap
There were six groups of 3 or 4 with winners and runners up in each group going forward to a straight knockout. Individual handicaps were a quarter allowance of the handicaps normally received in League Cup matches.
Exceptions to the lowest two handicapped players winning through the groups were:

Team mates Smith and Bates
had a close match with Tony Bates just edging through with a
comprehensive last game winning 11-5. A tied set between club
mates Mark Ramsbottom and Mike Brierley where Mark won the next game
‘play off’ to put him through. Ian McLean came back from a
six point deficit over Lee Devenport the last game to win by five. Nathan Buckley had a six
point lead in handicaps and was able to extend that to eight points at
the end of the match. |

Starting level with 11 points
each and a marathon second game which Andy won 17-15 he was able to keep
his nose ahead winning the next two games also. Mick Moir proved too strong
for team mate in the middle two games and Mark losing the other two a
deuce. Team mates again Ian made
good use of his seven point advantage in four close games shared two each. Just one point separated Ben
and Nathan and three of the four games going to deuce, Nathan winning two
and the third game he also won by five.

The first semi-final between Ian McLean and Nathan Buckley couldn’t have been closer with Ian winning by two points despite starting eight behind. In the second semi Mick Moir came back from an eleven point deficit to win just a handful of points to put him through to the final where he faced Ian.
Mick won the first game 11-9 and had a very strong second winning by nine points to put him ahead in the match two more games winning 9 and 6 to take the division 1 title.
Team mates Smith and Bates had a close match with Tony Bates just edging through with a comprehensive last game winning 11-5.
